hey i have a TE 4cyl magna executive. Had 17x7 ROH furys on there with 235/45R17 93V rubber. I found ou they were illegal and the tyre factory (where i got them fitted) agreed and said we will change them to 225/50R17 with a load rating of 91. i said no i need higher. They asked me to bring my car so they could look at it.
my car has a load rating of 95!!
They can only find 1 performance tyre in australia and that goes for $350 per tyre that will fit my car. I always thought magna's had a load rating of 94. They offered me a full refund which i took but i want mags again.

is my load rating wrong or what have people done to fit mags to their car that also has a load rating of 95

PS i know 4cyl are slow but im not fussed about goin fast, fuel economy is sweet as.

well the tyre factory is full of sh!t. Maybe THEY dont stock many brands of tyres, thats the only reason i can think of them not being able to supply a tyre with 95+.
I have had the same problem a couple of times now (TE with 17" roh furys as well :D) and you just gotta shop around. Off the top of my head Toyo, Hankook, Nankang and Simex all offered tyres with a 95-97 load ratings for between $140-190 each.

Ive had the nankangs (wore pretty quick but i had bearings issues which i think affected that, and currently have Hankook's which seem to be wearing a bit better but are noisy. I'll probably try Simex tyres next.

And i know you get what you pay for, but there is no way in hell i can justify spending $1000+ on tyres just about once a year! So cheap tyres for me please lol

You could always change your tyre placard to be more in line with the mods you have done to your car. BTW, one way to make tyres last longer is to buy them before you need them and have them sit around in your spare room for a few months. You notice how your first set of tires on a new car always last the longest (still on my 1st set and nearly 100k). Thats because the rubber is not as supple and doesnt wear as quick as brand new (green) tyres.

The legal rim width for 235's on a 17" wheel is 7.5" - 9.0"

I don't think it's going to be easy finding a reasonably priced 225x17x50 tyre with a load rating of 95 or higher though. It's not a common size. Yes, Hankook, Toyo, etc. offer 95+ rated tyres, but not in that size.

Are places like the tyre factory obligated to refund or replace your tyres with the right ones if they sold you the wrong ones.

Cause i got 17"x7.5" and at the time of purchase 5 weeks or so ago they put the Falken ZE-326 on and i only saw that they were wrong when i was swapping them around last week and saw they were the wrong load rating, and they said these were the right ones.

Also im in Vic so i gotta make sure they are legal as cops love P platers and modded cars here.

the ones that i went to have been really good about it. They said the only thing they can think to do is refund my money. They admitted it was their fault and i shouldnt have to pay for anything. they should offer you a legal replacement but they cant find a similar priced one for me so refund it is. Just dont be rude or anything and they should sort u out

You have to consider the following Before even you go for changing the tyres/ rims,

1) Are they covered by your insurance company? Remember most insurance companies work under the laws set by state/government. so when law in vic say you can only go 2" high and 1" wide , your insurance might allow it and migth not (RACV/NARMA).

2) If you change the door play card you will not only be voiding your warranty but also making your car non-roadworthy.

3) make sure check with vic roads, rta, police station, and your insurance.

hmm this is something I've always been slightly worried about, I bought my 2000tj advance second hand from a dealer and my car does not have any tire placard on it at all. Around a year and a half ago I put on 17x7 rims (to stick with insurance) but the tire place has put on 235/45/17 tires and I believe the load rating of the tires is 93. I'm not entirely sure what to do as when I inquired about getting new wheels with the insurance company they only mentioned to stick to 17x7 (nothing about tires) I mentioned to the wheel place initially that I was going 17x7 to keep it legal (yet nothing was said about the tires) and I have no tire placard to refer to from the date when I originally bought the car and wouldn't of known any better if I hadn't of read it on these forums (about a year back)

i went through all this BS not long ago......

its illegal to fit 235 tyres on 7" wide rims, which will void your insurance.
the load rating on your car is 94+, you shouldn't have a problem finding 225 tyres with a 94 or higher load rating

yeh my tires are underated by 20kg per tire for my car but my car has a higher weight rating than a mates AU xr6 which is a heavier car, doesnt make sense to me. I reken sometimes the car companys just photocopy the nearest placecard and stick it on the car....

hmmm so the question is where do I stand on this. Do I go have words with my mitsu dealer for not having a tyre placard on the car when or bought it and do I go back to the wheel/tyre place and demand a new set of tyres (As these are too wide and don't have a high enough load rating) even though I've done around 30,000k on them (plenty more left in them as well) as I fear they will tell me where to shove it.

edit: just checked my tyres they are actually 94 rating so wonder if my car is one of the ones that is 94 or 95... does it really matter though considering it is a 235 on 7" rim? I do remember specifically asking the tyre place if 235 was fine for the rim and they continually said yes.

your load rating would be 94 but the 235 on a 7" rim is illegal

i'd go quiery mits about it, but it not having a tyre placard is no excuse for the tyre shop to fit 235 tyres on a 7" wide rim, have a go at them about it cause if you crash your car your screwed. a guy at a well know tyre place in QLD tried to tell me it was legal, i checked with the ppl that make the rules and it was illegal, their service was sh!t anyways so i went elsewhere

Mine is a series 1 TJ and it says 95 load rating on the placard. I just went to a couple of car yards and looked at a few series 2 TJ exec and wagons , even a Ralliart and they all said 94. So If Mitsubishi thought it was OK for a Wagon to have 94 load rated tyres then why did the series 1 have 95?? I rang Mitsu cust service and they said they'll look into it and get back to me. I am hoping they'll send me a new tyre placard or a covering letter, so I can get some tyres at a reasonable price too.

Well I have 235/40/R18 93H, My tire placard stats that it requires each tire to have a loading of 670 kg, or 94H, My tires loading are 650 kg which, is a grand total of 2.6 tonne, I dont think i am ever going to have an extra tonne of weight in my vehicle.

I wouldnt be worried about it a whole lot, But check with your insurnace company ask them, write down the date you spoke to them, the name of the person you spoke to, get them to send an update to you, of your policy as well, if any changes were made.

Also if the tire fitters are telling you its legal, make sure you keep the receipts and date's that the tires and rims were fitted, as you would anyway, because they should not be putting anything on the vehicles that is illegal even if the customer requests it, and the receipt is the contract between you and the tire fitter for services rendered, so come accident time if you ever have one, and you are told by the police that your tires were not illegal or the insurance company decides to try and pull a swifty on you, you can tell them who put the tires on, show the receipts, and that way, you wont be liable.
