View Full Version : Engine rebuild and conversion.
I am about to rebuild a 2.6 litre TP engine and convert my wagon to manual at same time. Are the cv shafts for auto and manual the same or do I need to replace them too.?

Some reckon they are not the same because the part numbers different, but they do fit as I have replaced the one's on my TP manual with automatic one's from a TM.According to the work shop manual there's no differents in specification bewteen the 2.

Join the club mate! I'm doing likewise, for a couple of reasons.
Now, to answer that question. From the research I undertook before this project, the driveshafts between the TN-P Auto and manual are identical. I can't say for TM, as it wasn't relevant for my particular application.
Any further questions, just ask.

Yep! They are the same, wont have any problems there. Let us know how it goes.

andy, gav.. are you's rebuilding or reconditioning? recon means new pistons and oversized rings ect.
rebuilding a motor is unbelievably satisfying for some reason

dont quote me on this, but i've heard the block in the 1st gens is actually different from auto to manual, making it impossible to do a conversion...

I dont think the blocks are differant from auto to manual, i have one of each sitting in my shed, and they are the same. And other people have done manual conversions...

the only time ill quote that is in my post right now saying that is absolute crap. the 2.6L block is the same all the way through the 1st gens, and 2nd gens. not to mention the 2L and 2.6L sigmas (the 2.6L is just the 2L sigma engine bored out, thats y we can only bore out to a 2.8). the differences are in timing chain assemblies etc, not the block itself.

Your auto block will work and the drive-shafts are the same.. You might want to take a read through this, any questions just ask :)

Isnt much point in increasing it by 200cc. the money to rebore the motor and get new pistons and crank would be through the roof. better of spending that of flowing and balancing of the std internals and making a astron rev to 5.5 :P (6500 really i was just having a crack at their revvie nature)

There's no difference between auto and manual engine blocks on 1st gens Magnas but there is on the Sigmas.
It does not realy matter if blocks are different as the motor I am rebuilding is out of one of my grand tour TP magna,s and the five speed was behind it already i will be doing whole engine and box swap over if that makes any sense.:-)

ahhh that must be what i heard... someone at work had one and was going to a conversion till they pulled it apart and realised it was all different!
As quoted. All Magna Astrons are identical. As is the Automatic Sigma block. The manual block and the 2l Astron 1 are different though.
As for mine, it's a total rebuild of the original motor, and the rest of the car, the interim motor's future is not decided. Probably a boat anchor, with the automatic.
There's a list of my rebuild in the first gen section. Might get some photos of the shell...
