I tried to start the car today after going to harvey normans, and it stalled straight away. If i hold the accelerator down a bit then engine would be fine, but if i take my foot off it again it would cut out.

So the accelerator cable needs to be tensioned or something, is this an easy job to do ? i have no idea how to do so. Its urgent because i need to drive back to melbourne tomorrow for uni.

your ISC (idle speed controller) motor, has probably died. Pretty common problem among the 2nd gens.

It wont be the tension in your accel cable. The ICS might be at fault, if it is you can siply losen the idle screw somewhere on the TB to allow more air through it. If you could post some pictures of the TB from all 6 angles i can point it out to you to test it yourself. ICS will be around 150 new and 50 from the wreckers at the most.

$100 for a generic one from Burson's. Easily replaced using a socket wrench to undo 2 screws in about 10mins time.

I couldn't loosen the idle strew on the trottlebody, it seems to be stuck with lock tight or something. I'd say it is the ICS motor.
Thanks for the help guys, I'm taking the car for a service as its due soon anyways.

Hi there. I had this exact problem in my 2nd gen. It started after i had to disconnect the battery. I took it to mitsu as they said the engine comp needed a restart. Only cost me $40 and half a day (half a day to push 3 buttons....)

One word of warning, NEVER adjust the throttle stop screw.

The one you want is aboe 1cm in dia, it is on top of the throttle body, usually has a rubber plug covering it.

Sorry I can not even see what the bracket holding on the plenhum chamber would have to do with idle unles you are talking about your rear engine mount

The only thing it could ever do is be too tight and set the idle too high by pulling the butterfly a little open, but it couldnt make the idle too low.

Sounds like the ISC might be at fault.
