I am think of removing the balance shafts and leaving them out as I did when had gsr sigma does it make any difference to viberating at idle in magna,s as did not feel it in sigma.

wat exactly does removing the balance shaft do.

removal of shafts and balancing crank and rods free,s up the reving a little and makes the motor more responsive, also can increase fuel econ if driven with light foot. I suppose the less drag on crank shaft to drive would help tourque too. and no more rattly balance shaft chain.

in response to that why is it there then. There must be a reason for mitsi to put them in.

the reson they put them in is to make the car more smoothe and probably quieter or some thing so they can semm more models to grumpy grampas who are picky..

yeah balance shafts are just to get rid of any vibration that would come from the engine into the chassis sorta thing and u would feel it in the cabin. just trying to give ultimate ride comfort and yes, for grumpy old grandpas who are picky

Yeah, they are there for a reason. I reckon leave them but try it. Some engines won't mind if they're gone, others won't like it at all. You could try it and see how it goes.

on the 2.4L TE 1996 morot it works fine.. :) even removing just one works fine.

Maybe for your 2.4. I'm saying that due to production tollerances, someone elses 2.4 might not like it. I doubt it will run like a tractor but someone might notice it with their engine.

I once saw a Sigma that had the shafts running out of time, at 2000rpm this made the rear view mirror vibrate so hard it was unusable.
I have not seen a Magna with a 2.6L with the balance shaft eliminator kit fitted, I have been told that in the FWD 2.6L removing the shafts will create a noticable vibration and this is not the case with a RWD 2.6L.

The 2.6L is a large engine for a petrol 4cyl. It is a design problem that in a 4cyl of this size or bigger a noticable harmonic vibration is created and hard to avoid.
Mitsu patented the 4G54 twin balance shaft design as a way to overcome this vibration.

And licenced the design to several companies, including Porsche.

The sole reason for my deleting the balance shafts is related to why this motor failed. However, I'm getting the motor balanced to counteract most of the harmonics. It's not as simple as getting the kit, and then getting two new fishing sinkers.

Gav, What happened in your motor ?

Which one?

First one stripped the bottom chain guides, and damaged the upper balance shaft bearings. Hence the need for the kit.

The second motor was a secondhander, and broke the timing chain guide bolts, and stripped the main bearings when the transmission called and jammed into second gear, and redlined the engine for over a minute, whilst I had to find a safe place to pull over.

mate of mine was wanting to try it in mine when i changed the chains.
the modified oil pump drive was out of a mitubishi canter.i dont know about the chain.

he pulled down an engine to get the chain kit out of and found that flywheel and other bolts wielded in place.might be it had a vibration problem.
