View Full Version : Front speaker mounts

In the quest to design my new car stereo, I've been looking at mounting points for the speakers. Since I'd like to keep the install stealth for security and resale reasons, I can't go carving up my doors.

So it seems there are only 3 places to put speakers.
1) Standard low in the door speaker hole
2) Crappy holes in the corner of the dash facing the windscreen
3) In the doors behind the rear-view mirrors (don't have the brackets to do this).

I'd rather not use the dash mounts as I can't imagine any kind of good sound comming out of them. I'm hoping to use the low door mount for a Midrange/woofer (or perhaps some kind of combination).

Can anyone else suggest other places to mount that won't screw up the interior of my car?

Also, has anyone retrofitted speakers into the mirror tweater mounts in a car that didn't come with them? Do most tweaters fit in here and do they sound alright?

Thanks

i just put my speakers in the door where the stock ones went.

my tweeters are just sitting on the dash out of them

u can buy tweeter holders for that little triangle part from mitsu parts for like $12

I mounted my mids in stock door location and tweeters in the "crappy holes" :) in dash. I used thin MDF to make a ring than covered in speaker cloth - these fit in the holes perfectly and look like they came with the car. You can look in the car and think its stock.

I know that the tweeter position is probably not the best spot but I think they sound great - you just need to angle the tweeters so that they bounce of the windscreen across to the other side of the car.

I found the poifect spot for mine. Played around for days till I got it right.
Got some adjustable brackets and they sit totally out of view at night, deep and high in the kicks.
Besides that I used to mount them on the carpet in the kicks, but they get kicked around too much by unsuspecting passengers.

This way there is no noticeable separation and full adjustment of tweeter angle.
Soz, digicam's gone on holidays

Hey, I like it. Even if I remove the brackets it doesn't look like the holes won't be very noticible. They look high enough not to be kicked, but they still sound good?

By the way, what did you acompany them with? Just a couple of mids?

The holes in the kick panels are only 2mm with a small screw going through them into the shaft of the bracket. (Im not a fan of interior damage)

Definetly no kicks to the tweeters now, doesnt matter how you get in the car. I used to have some Cadence tweeters mounted flat on the carpet in the kick panels (where they would be to have them point to the opposite headrest)

Sound is unbeleivable... These are Morel Hybrids, and are coupled with the Morel Hybrid 6" woofer.
Running active off a Coustic Electronic crossover through 4 channels of one of my Soundstream Picasso's. *Cough 880 w rms total.../Cough

Mind you in reality I dont use half of that (Fronts are only rated at ~110 w rms but I like the headroom.

With them down that low you get the Rainbow effect, that is for extreme left/right sounds it will appear to come from the bottom of the dash below the airvents, but for dynamic music, most which has a rich centre stage it raises up to dash height in the middle. (Still thinking about ambient tweets on the dash to add a bit more depth.) But very happy at the moment.

Doors are fully deadened and sealed.

Actually, you might be surprised at how good the dash-mounted ones sound. In my TR those were the only fronts I had and it sounded great. <disclaimer>high stage, etc, etc </disclaimer>

Is there anything to screw into behind the panel? Is this bracket you mention added by you?

Cor, what did all that cost? Did you DIY?

Problem with dash mounted tweets is not high stage... That is a bonus. You should really be trying to get the stage at eye level

Problem is separation with the woofer (only with splits) and path difference between the left and right creating bad stereo reproduction (left sounds louder than the right as the path distance is greater.

All up total system was well under retail. But not too bad. Pays to do ur research and save up money so when the right thing comes around you can buy it.
Morels cost around $950 retail to my knowledge back in their day. My Soundstreams can't be bought in Australia but dont come cheaply

Screws into the plastic. Took a while to line up perfectly. Just drilled a small hole, popped a screw there from behind and the screw goes into the stem of the bracket.

could you take some clearer photos sometime? Im getting splits at some stage soon and am unsure where to mount the tweeters. Any pics/details of how you did it would be great!

s_tim_ulate,
Am looking hooling up my DA Hex 600s splits in my TH, with a JL 300/4 to power the front, your tweeter mounts are the best, where did you get them?

You can make pods like these:

But if security is an issue, you can sink the speaker in a little and cover the enitre pod with grille cloth instead like this:

I beleive Morel manufacture these. I sourced them off an importer who has since moved out of the country :( I've been on the hunt for more (will let you know if I find them)

My tweets are designed to use these as well as the flush mounts. The tweets themselves have small screws coming out the back.

Will get some better pics up next week when the digi cam comes back into the country...

But if you're thinking about mounting in a 3rd gen, this is the best spot I could find for little separation and small path difference. Also invisible from the outside.

They could be a bit deeper in the kicks to be optimal, but all the other spots I tried involved the dash obstructing the line of sight, or they were simply impractical with seating positions.

Tim, that's excellent placement!! *looks at own car with tweeter in dash holes with a frown*

Hmm, better dig up those brackets that came with the Focal tweeters. The ones I looked at and went "meh, as if they're gonna be useful". lol

Please do, those mounts are sweet.. although they don't look that complicated, how hard can they be to find?

Fhrx,
You sell Morel etc, etc do you have any similar mounts?

If you know the style of connection there is for small telescopic aerials it is the same for this. You could probably knock one up urself. Hardest part will be attaching it to ur tweeters without doing damage.

Now to fix this low stage... ;)

I went the easy option... still sounds good, does the job...

Well here is mine..
They are the Clarion Tweeters that I use to replace the Magnat ones I used to have ( Way too loud way too much Power and Cooked the poor things) and they have to be the sweetest tweeter I have ever heard..They are fully protected but as you can see I didn't want to cut the door trim hence the wire trailing up to the door trim..

The Stage is clear but not sharp and the music does surround you not drown you..
As far as tweeter mounting goes Blu tac is your best friend. It holds like Chewing gum but is way easier to clean up..

Have looked at ariel bases, look like they will fit my tweeters. The Diamond Audio Hex tweeters are mounted in a gimbal on the surface mount, with plenty of room behind. Also thought of another alternative, a small tripod mount, with a ball head. Thanks tim u late.
