View Full Version : TR wagon questions!
i've just bought a TR auto v6 wagon with 180,000km
1)i notice it blows a bit of white smoke when blipping the accelerator at idle. from what i can gather from searching forum/internet, its likely to be valve stem seals. (~$250 to fix maybe?)
2)i also notice its leaking somewhere around the oil filter. i'll do an oil change/filter change but is this a bad sign or something that is common (ie perhaps its clogged with sludge or something??)
3)the tyres are pretty much shagged which means i may as well put some mags on it. i like the ol' black-silver VR-x rims. but they're 1k new. i haven't seen any 2nd hand sets around. what can i expect to pay for a 2nd hand set if they turn up? any ideas?
4) whats a good suspension mod for the wagon? i'm thinking rear sway bar?? i don't want sports handling. (i'm sick of that already) i just want something that can counter a bit of understeer and possibly help extend tyre life.

DDT,
Welcome to the TR/TS (KR/KS) Wagons !
... and a V6 too - how nice.
... low K's too - well done!
1) smoke? Yeah mine is blowing a bit too, hoping it's the Valve Stems - the alternatives are just too scary. Not sure of cost - yet to get mine looked at.
3) rims? - Keep a watch on ebay, trading post and your local tyre places - second handies come up regularly. Also look into some of the package deals offered by places like BobJane etc. sometimes they can be very competitive.
4) suspension mods ? - So far mine's only got the King Springs (Super Low fronts and Low backs) but I have heard that sway bars are good.
thanks GRDPUCK,
yeah, its a v6 low k's but because its an 8seater a lot of kids have been through the cabin. but the sellers made no effort to clean it up , from what i can see, it should clean up nice enough. only the drivers seat has a small tear, but i'm gonna take the sheepskin covers from my v6 sigma before i sell it.
paint has quite a few small scratches but being white it doesn't show up much and should be easier to tidy up. i also plan to get the bottom half of those grey bumpers painted white. not sure how much it will cost. maybe $300??? (maybe someone here knows)
i also need to replace the rear plastic grey thing running across the hatch.. another thing to find.

umm, well with the suspensions i am still looking around for some prices for some shock absorbers, as i hav a rough idea on how much the springs are going to be (King Lows $120-$140 dollars a pair) and also im looking around for a set of sway bars
and those TJ series II rims, im also looking around for them too, i reckon theyre be sellin for like 500 to 800 bucks 2nd hand... maybe cheaper i dunno
P.S. u guys are lucky for havin the v6.. i got the 4cyl

...but because its an 8seater...
8 Seater? Must have a dickie seat like mine. If you don't need it - take it out and sell it. What type of dickie seat does it have?
Me - I need it (I have 7 children). Although it's hardly ever used, it's good to have if the other FAMILY car is in being serviced.

What's the difference between the Verada and the KS Touring Wagon rear wagon garnish ?
I've considered these but I think I may just colour code mine the same as the car ? not sure yet ?

I have a set of Front springs I can sell - Kings Lows - to suit 1995 TS Wagon. We are having a Garage Sale this weekend and I was just going to put them up for sale in it (in the off-chance hope of a Magna owner stopping by) but if your interested - send me a PM.
I'm in Victoria (Melb. or Ballarat if that helps).

When I was looking to buy my magna, i found out that if it is blowing smoke, it means the engine is fked. Not sure if that is true

there isnt really a difference between the touring model and the veradas garnish, but from wat i remember, the touring model has a rear fog light and it sits in one of the reverse light housing

not always it could mean that the oil is leaking thru sumwhere and burning up producing black smoke- i think thats wat it was.. cant remember wat my dad told me about that
people can correct me if im wrong

yeah its got the same cloth as the rest of the car so it looks like a factory jobby or perhaps a retrofitted factory part. from the back it folds forward and up to allow you most of the rear space. you can't fit adults in it (cramped) but i guess upto 10y old should be sweet.
i don't have 7 kids like yourself(!) but i have 2 (3y old and 6 months) so i figured occasionally it would come in handy.
i might go tomorrow to pick-a-part to see if i can find that rear garnish.
regarding blowing smoke, it doesn't necessarily mean engine death. oil can leak from soo many spots, some more serious than others. but for the v6 apparently over 100000km the valve stem seals go hard so they don't seal properly oil gets into the cyls. i heard you don't have to remove the head for that job, so shouldn't be so expensive to fix.
nice rims gerard, i will consider

The oil leak can be several things, most likely the cam belt seal, the oil works it's way down
Other areas for leaks are Rocker Covers, Rocker Cover Bolt seals, Rear main seal, Sump (it is a seal not a gasket) and the end of the heads have largish round seals that go hard.
The smoke is the valve stem seals, easy enough job just fiddly, take the oppertunity to change gaskets and other seals while doing the job anyway, when I did mine did lash adjusters, cam belt and seals, front seal, sump, rocker covers, end cam seals, bolt seals etc.
The engine itself is still good for about double what it has on it now provided it is cared for

With the oil filter porbably good to change it any way if you just brought the car. When I brought mine it was blowing a bit of smoke but when I changed the oil it stopped. Beats me what was wrong with it but it may have been oil coming thropugh the pcv vale cos the throttle body was a bit oily.
It was also crusty as, so I don't think that it had been changed in a while.
Any way, the leak may be because the oil filter gasket is ****ed or it isn't on tight enough.
Hope this helps

All TR/KR and TS/KS Magna/Verada 2.6 V6 wagons have the rear red garnish .
The Verada touring has a red fog light on the right side where the back - up light is.
I own a TS V6 magna SE wagon and a KS Verada Touring wagon which is a manual.

the white smoke could be the valve seals , more than likley ,
the oil leak will be the front seals / gaskets , i suggest you replace the lot and your timing belt at the same time if it hasnt been done for the second time , the timing belt will have to be done in the next 20,000 and just tell the machanic to do it cheap as he has to pull of the front anyway to change the seals.
also welcome to the wagon club
