Hello all. Just want to say HI and ask some questions.
Well not to start a flame war but I would have never thought that I would like to buy a magna, but after testing a whole heap of cars to purchase for my family I decided on the magna, why, simple, heaps of standard equipment and dam is this thing fast. Nice looking and in general a great car, ****s all over fords and commodores and Camry?s in its price range.
I purchased a 2004 TL magna 5sp manual EL. SO far it has mags and a spoiler form a vrx to dress it up. The exhaust is ordered and so is the filter. I am going to remap the computer once the gready e-management unit is in and later on possibly a supercharger.
For now I have some questions I hope you guys can answer for me. Firstly I have noticed that the gearbox is a little clunky. Now I know that the gearbox linkage is by cable, so can it mean that the cables might need to be adjusted or is the oil to heavy. It seams to get better after some driving but if you do a slower change, especially 2-3, you can feel the gears engaging, no noise as such but fell more then anything. What do you guys recommend, a lighter oil, the standard gearbox is a 75w, which is pretty heavy I was thinking of using a 55w or so, especially since I?m in tassy.
Second of all, the engine sometimes seams to drop below idle and then seams to get a bit lumpy, only happened twice so far in 500 kms but I was just wandering. The engine also seams noisy, not bad noisy but like the injectors and stuff, is this normal. It doesn't seam any louder then other magnas I drove but just different.
AHHHH yeah how do you adjust the hand break in the magan, is in under the car as in the older commodores or on top in the cabin like newer pulsars???
As you can see I?m a little pedantic about my cars, and bikes for that matter.
Another of many questions to come, how reliable are these cars, I have heard a lot of good things and some bad, as with all cars, but what are some of the things I should be watching out for in this car. Is there anything I should be watching out for, the car still has warranty so I want to iron out any bugs before it runs out.
Does anyone have a redback exhaust? I am about to purchase a whole system and have to shorten the centre pipe by 4" but I was wondering how good this system is. I want a nice exhaust but not to loud to keep the kids awake on trips.
Has anyone seen any manuals to buy for these cars, or has anyone have one on cd or something.
Ok for now I guess, but I will be back with photos.
Thanks

About the rear window.. its a TL right? i know for a fact that mums KJ verada had the wrong rear windscreen put in it in the factory, wasnt wide enough, slight gap (prob. 10mm) between window and panels on either side.. waranty covered it and a new one was put in at no cost... it was fine on smooth roads but over the slightest bump it would rattle, sounded like rubber rubbing up against something.. maybe this could be the fault, i also know that they can become loose, coz mitsu when she first told them about it tightened it and it stoped for about a week then came back, but i would immagine that with the TL's they wouldnt have the wrong windscreen in it... ask mitsu while its under waranty, shouldnt cost u a cent

A lot of TL rear windows are prone to breaking so i have heard. My uncle had one repaired under warranty as well.
The TL's are fantastic cars, congratulations on your purchase.

Hey good buy, I have a TL as well, no windscreen problem, but my seat was a little loose, the base needed to be replaced, rocked back and fourth sometimes, was fixed under warranty.
My gearbox can be notchy, when first started, its a little tough, but after the first 2-4 changes the gearbox is well oiled and is great, no probs with it, the changes are smooth and responsive.
My engine has no problems it idles very smooth, cant hear the thing sometimes. with aircon on and off.
I have a VR-X, it has a modified exhaust from the factory, it sounds really sweet, when you aftermarket extractors and Cat Back, it should sound the same, it has a nice rev to it, and can get loud when working hard, driving on the highway it has a nice Humm, which you dont really notice and wont keep the kids awake.
Hope that was a little bit of help, go and post the in the mods section and ask about exhausts, some of the members that have modified their 3.5 ltrs will give you more detail.

i can help answer some questions.
yes the injectors and so forth on the 3.5 magna can be a little bit noisy and "rattly" i get the same thing with my TL magna.
Reliability wasnt too crash hot with the 1st gen magnas, but the second gen improved alot and there really isnt any consistant problems with a third gen. Dont worry about reliability, its all good.
I have a redback exhaust, just the rear muffler. Its not too noisy at all, actually fairly quiet for a sports muffler. It can drone a little bit below 2000rpm.. something that i personall am trying to get rid off, but you get use to it quite quickly and it sounds very impressive when you get up it. As i said i only have the rear muffler, not the full cat back. Perhaps with the full cat back this eliminates the drone i hear below 2000rpm. Extractors may also help this, something i also dont have. The power improvement though is quite good, especially low down power. I didnt notice much difference in the top end, but the bottom end power of my car just improved out of sight with the new muffler. Was quite impressed
