just bought a Tr magna V6 auto. goes good drives good. now i've done less than 60km in it so far but i noticed when i had it in PWR mode and tried for some hard acceleration (it was fine) but once i levelled off to a constant speed it was hunting all over the place deciding which gear to be in. at least that's what it felt like.
so, is this normal?
or is it a sign of impending doom?
or is it getting used to the new driver or something?
or perhaps its the pwr button itself (bad contacts so going between PWR/nonPWR mode)
or something else?

but for a while also in normal mode when accelerating slowly from standstill i could feel a bit of a shunting from the gearbox as if it were half way engaged/disengaged but partially "biting". but that went away as it warmed up.

perhaps it needs its fluids drained and replaced.

but like i said i've only had it for a few hours and 99% of the time its fine. just those couple of events. just wondering if its common mitsu autobox behaviour or not.

Doesnt sound like a problem...

I know with my auto, with pwr on. I accelerate hard, and if i back of at around 80, it will be in second gear and the revs are pretty high (around 4000), and because pwr is on, it wouldnt kick into 3rd until 5200 normaly, so cause i back off it kinda sits on 2nd for a second (hoping u'll continue with the throttle), then kicks into 3rd and fourth...

thats my 4cyl anyway

Sounds like mine too, If you accelerate hard when the engine is cold, after you ease off the throttle the engine feels abit shaky. I just let it hit the right temp before i do any major revving. You'll feel it being abit sluggish when it's cold, dont worry that's normal.

I have a 4 cyl auto that will sometimes not shift into 4th when o/d is engaged off the switch and also sometimes suddenly jumps back into 3rd and then wont shift back to 4th tillthe o/d button is pressed on and off twice.
I drained the trans fluid, removed and cleaned the pan and replaced the pick-up filter. I refilled it with Factory Mitsu Fluid. It took about 3L of fluid. It hold a lot more from dry but you can't drain the torque convertor without removing it.
There has been a slight improvement in the trans since this and it doesn't play up as often but it will still play up.

Holding before shifting if you back off at high rpm is normal in magna autos especially when cold.

The shunting when cold is more of a worry, I would recomend you do drain and replace the trans fluid with mitsu fluid.

thanks guys i'll definitely drain and replace fluids.
benau, regarding your 4th gear, i read in the manual last night that if the auto gets too hot it will automatically disengage 4th. i guess changing the fluids as you did would help a little. but perhaps even a trans cooler would be better.- if it is heat build up that is causing the problem..

this morning it was a bit cold here in perth and the trans seemed ok. when i picked up the car yesterday it hadn't been driven for 2 weeks. so that may have contributed to the slight shunting when i left the place i bought it.
