Theres 2 Elite wheels, but despite the style, the peeling you explain is the finish or lacquer on the alloy that has worn off. the only way to fully restore the factory look is a sandblast and powdercoat
part from that, to get them clean just water and soap, or pressurised water, or steam, alot of the cleaning liquids affect the finish coat more so sometimes.
my experience and knowledge.

wet n dry paper for a bit 1600g and even 2000g
then get em with a real nice polished autosol/megiairs metal polish (sp)
that will make em shinyer then they where stock
or steam, alot of the cleaning liquids affect the finish coat more so sometimes.
i would go near them with steam let alone any liquids as you will make the current clear coat just as worst TRUST me lol

When I bought my Elante - the wheels on it were terrible - the clear coat was that rooted it was not funny. After talking to a few mates - one suggested that I strip the clear coat off with gasket stripper.
It worked a gem, had to do it 2-3 times per wheel (spray on, let it soak, use plastic scraper to spray off, rinse then when dry repeat until happy with it) but it looks 100% better than it did with the peeling and discoloured clear coat.
Problem with your Elite mags is, I think they are painted, so doing this will probably screw the paintwork up - but it works for other alloys (that aren't painted!!!)

shows how much you know, coz unlike your inexperience, ive done it, cleaned my wheels, never lifted anymore of the already peeling clear coat and i still do it when i clean my car.
theres a right way and a wrong way to do it, guess what way you did it.

right.......... so I was just trying to make him do the wrong thing, cause you know that's how I get my kicks and all
may I point out that the Atom TN Elite mags dont have clear coat on them... i've steamed mine and it didn't wreck them any more (but not that it did much to clean them - this grime aint coming off too easy).
i put mag cleaner on it, and that helped - also got a wire brush on a drill and then helped get rid of some of the paint. Best solution would be to sandbalst and repaint/powdercoat
and since when were magna's designed off of a valiant??... they are structurally near the same as a later model sigma (maybe a GN or GK?) - just widened to fit the motor east-west - that and i reckon mitsu would've copied their own car (seeing as they made them an all - and have the presses to make them) rather than the valiant
when the magnas came out, mitsubishi wasn't chrylser anymore - my grandpa worked for mistu/chrylser and has told me all about the changeovers and stuff

Actually the Magna body is not a widened Australian (GK/N) Sigma. It is actually a widened Japanese Galant/Sigma (1983 from memory) which was already FWD. They adapted it for Australian conditions, made it wider for Aussies and to fit the Astron in.
