I am thinking about starting to compete with my car next year in with SQ or SPL competitions. Anyone had experience with that?

I haven't, but my mate is Mr_Bob from CAA.. www.caraudioaustralia.com.

He's the NSW Representative and he's won the CAASQ (I think that's it) comp before. Have a chat on the forum there, they will all give you advice..

DEFINITELY sign up on CAA if you're serious about competing.

I've often thought about taking mine in there for a laugh too ;) Seeing how well my sub $1200 system goes! lol

Yeah, a couple of years ago, Pure sound and SPL.

Got out of it because when I started, it was self-installed systems, clever installations done on a low budget. Now, it is just a case of just throw money at it - cashed up riceboys take their cars to a car audio shop and pass over a fist full of cash, and take delivery in a couple of weeks time.

Sigh... If you want to compete, you need to get an idea of your baseline - imaging (you can go to time alignment, I actually made my own 4 channel unit, reasonably simple), response (using RTA - Real Time Analyser) can be cleaned up with multi-band equalisers (again, made my own, if you are electronicly inclined I can give you the PCB foils), aesthetics, or SPL - Db drag racing :) Lots of fun, lots of noise.

Thought about competing again in the 600+ division (where I was before) but I dunno... Like I said, the majority of competitors have NFI exactly what is in their car, least around my area...

I never managed to get a perfect score on the RTA (very few do) but I had a $2000 system competing against $10,000 systems, and managed to take one first and few seconds, much to the annoyance of other people.

So, yes, you can compete with low budget systems. There was talk of a sub $2000 competition category a few years ago - don't think it happened, but it would be a breath of fresh air to the scene...

Cheers

I personally wouldn't enter a spl comp in the magna. The dynamics of the car let you down (over a hyundai excel, charade, etc).

This guy out friday night had a 15" us-audio sub and a amp (< $1000 worth of gear only - read, dodgey brand aswell) and was doing mid-140's db - but in a pulsar hatch.

pfft...

a guy in Alice "Ronnel" has a TR sedan and he thumped 139.9db

so its all about how you wire it up, not what car you use.

ultimately you would suit the equiptment for the car, not the car for the equiptment..

oh, and those who are asking to get him on this forum, ive asked, hes not intrested :(
