Hi all,
I'm just about to pick up an '03 KJII AWD with 30K km and they are asking me to pick an extended warranty or not.
To help me pick I was wondering how much I could expect to spend on the average Mag between 100K and 200K kms and would like to hear how much any of you have spent on repairs that you've had done on your rides.
Regards,
Sean.

Read the fine print of the extended warranty, is it viable for you to take the car back to that particular dealer every time it needs to be serviced etc?
In some cases you will void the warranty if the car is services elsewhere...

Yeah, read and understood all that. It's very restrictive.
What I'm wondering about is am I actually gonna end up spending any money on the car at all or will the $3K+ (warranty + cost of servicing) be wasted money.
Do any of you wish you'd bought an extended warranty after your Mag has done a gearbox/head/something-else-expensive-or-not?
Do these cars even wreck anything expensive, eg. $500+?

Well I got an extended warranty (well dad got it for me after he got the price down from 1500 to 500) but I decided to stick it up their arse when I could get my servces cheaper elsewhere and better work.
It doesn't cover anything, all I got out of it was roadside assistance which I get with RAC anyway. Save your money and dont get it and the money u save can go towards servicing on the car.
It didn't cover my alternator when the belt went, then the pulley went destroying the alternator, all up that cost me close to 800 to get it all fixed up.
The fixed price servicing is BS too coz thats just a base major service, anything else they gotta do to your car they charge extra.
I guess it depends on the caryard aswell, I got mine from a very well known mitsu dealer in perth (sk**pers, i dont wanna bad mouth them now do I) and I didnt like the way I was treated as a customer, nor the fact that nothin was covered, or the fact I never actually got to speak to the mechanics just some guy behind a desk who didnt kno sh*t and tried to tell me I didnt kno ****.
I like k-mart tyre n auto service I use now. The guys are top blokes and dont think I dont know anything about my car plus they dont charge me extra hidden fees when I ask them to check stuff and i'm confident to take my car to them. I get to speak to the head mechanic (who comes thru KFC drive thru which is where I work) and my work is 50 metres away so I can drop it off in mourning and get it in afternoon.
Magns are reliable cars blowing heads and gearboxes arnt really a big thing that I have heard of.
Keep ur money mate, find a good mechanic to do work on ur car. I feel far more safe with k-mart tyre n auto with my magna then a mitsu dealer who deals with magnas all the time.
So far i've spent $800 on repairs, nearly $1000 on servicing, and $500 on a warranty that isn't worth the paper it was written on. The $800 should have stayed at $150 but I beleive they were the ones who stuffed up the alternator the next 2 times (all up $550 more) Tho I couldn't prove it when the alternator failed (had to rebuild alternator, new pully and belt, took 2 days) but when the pully came loose and belt was slipping I could, still took them 5 hours to put in 1 nut and tighten the belt.
If it's a 2003 shouldn't u have warranty until the end of 2005?

I have an extended warranty - 3 years - with a large Toyota dealer here in Sydney. So far I've claimed for an alternator that started to fail (very noisy bearing) and also early on in my ownership, all 4 disks were machined and pads replaced. Both jobs were done with no fuss or bother at all. The car DOES have to go to them for scheduled servicing though, so as mentioned above, that can be a catch. But after nearly 1 year with the car, I don't regret the warranty.

Forget extended warranty; your statutory protection against the manufacturer is worth far more. The choice to make is, to have hassles now (servicing), or later (when you need to chase a fault with the car?). Choose extended warranty if you want the former.

It's just a gimick to that's high margin and pumps up the service department's HIGHER margins. I mean phone them without your rego details and get a quote on the service, now try to book for the same service and give your rego. This now flags on their screen that you've signed up so you HAVE to have it serviced there for it to be valid and you get a 2nd higher price. Not everywhere, but enough places do it.

Sorry to hear you ended up a grand out of pocket. How many miles on the clock when the tappets gave up the ghost?
