View Full Version : What exactly does PWR do?

You know, in second gens, underneath the gearstick, they have a AT Mode button.
It gives me extra power when my 4cyl is going up a hill and is struggling, but otherwise I don't notice a difference at all.
Is it just added Torque for towing/ added power?
Should I keep the added power on when I drive about, or is it a fuel waster?
Cheers.
I drive a 1991 TR Magna SE Automatic. Cheers.

The PWR (Power/Economy) button basically does this:
When ON, if you accelerate hard, it will change gears at a higher rev. usually between 5000 and 5500. Giving you that extra torque..
Otherwise usually it just changes at around 4500..
Also when pwr is on, if your cruising between 50-60km/hr it wont go into 4th gear until u speed up to about above 65ish..
If u keep pwr on, and drive normally, it wont affect anything. But when u decide to hoon around, its good for some quick acceleration. So keeping it on isnt a bad idea

Sounds good man, thanks stacks for your input.
I'll keep it on then, I'll post back here later after I've driven around with it for a bit. So long as it doesnt affect fuel economy at all (I already have **** fuel economy (350's on a tank of Ultimate) I'll be happy.
One thing though, my TR doesnt like being revved to 5000 - 5500 rpm, it screams so loud I feel like i'm killing it heh. That only happens when I floor it though, so I'll keep my foot where I know it will change at 4250 rpm, even with power.
Sometimes even, when it revvs that high, a little while afterwards that stupid Check Engine **** turns on and it annoys me lol

That doesnt sound like a good thing man, maybe have it checked out. The little icon usually means something serious. Might also explain your loss in fuel efficiency.
check it before it gets worse.
i agree, u better get it checked out...
well my car doesnt seem to sound bad goin over 4000 rpm  i love my exhaust system, but my parents dont :( i might hav to remove it coz they think im trying to race ppl coz of how it revvs
my brothers car (the 3rd gen) used to hav the engine check light switching on and off evry now and then, we found out that one of the censors were playing up, we fixed it up and no more problems. but still, get ur car checked out

Mate, we bought this car in 1994 and that wreched Check Engine thing used to turn on. We've had it checked many times, even by Mitsubishi, oh well.

When its on it seems asthough it consumes more petrol and the gauge drops alot quicker, also i heared if you leave it on always it can wear out..

Those little PWR buttons on the gearstick are *usually* the manual override for the overdrive on the automatic transmission. It forces the overdrive off, thus increasing revs and giving you more power as the engine is higher in the power band.
On some vehicles it also changes the auto transmission programming to shift gears at higher revs, increasing performance at the expense of fuel economy.
Overdrive is almost like a 'fourth gear' in an auto. It's main job is to lower revs while cruising on the highway, thus increasing fuel economy.
If you guys like to drive your car a bit more than most, switch it off at the bottom of a hill. Much easier to get up and your auto doesn't have to automatically drop out of OD. Most autos are fairly unhappy to do this. If it gets sluggish up a hill, a bit of a stab on the loud pedal will usually drop it outta OD.
Leaving it on will not damage your car. It is a bit like an Air conditioning system.... needs to be used now and again.

They have both, and O/D switch on the side of the auto stick, and a PWR button on the centre console. O/D off obviously turns the overdrive gear off.
And (sorry not much experience with autos) if I remember rightly the PWR does one of two things: 1) uses a different fuel ratio for more guts when towing etc, or 2) allows the gears to rev out further. Can't remmeber which.

My bad. On some cars the OD switch is marked PWR.
And it has been such a long time since I was even in a second-gen, let alone driven one.

PWR just makes the car rev out more to 5500 rpm, dunno about fuel mixtures. Though i do know with PWR on and OD off, you get a pretty responsive car that likes to rev, but expect to lose around 100km per tank or even more. I mainly only use this going up hills or trying to get in front at the lights or overtaking etc.

Lose 100ks out of a tank  what are you smoking man.. its just a bit higher revs, it doesnt add a supercharger on the car....
If you drive with o/d off, your only using the first 3 gears. O/D Off just means 4th gear wont kick in. as someone said..
If you fang it with PWR off, compared to PWR on, you might save 20 - 25ks a tank. If that.
If you drive normally with PWR off, compared to PWR on, its no difference because its only when u floor it, that it makes a difference.

Gerard's right it only changes when it shifts up a gear it does nothing to the air/fuel mix. It'd be nice if it did though the 4cyls need as much extra power as they can get.

I meant with OD off AND PWR on. If you continously drove around with that, you'd lose about 100km to a tank, i know, i've done it more than once :).

that's no good you shouldn't really drive under 80 with OD on cos it's too stressful for the engine.

meh, i drive in 2nd gear doing 80 :P Gotta love the high revs..

u can go into 3rd from 120 below, then 2nd u shouldnt be going above 90km/hr.. Thats what the manual says, and ifu try the engines just gonna be screaming lol
dropping into 3rd was meant for hills (it does it automatically anyway) or pullin a trailer.
goin into 2nd around corners is just fun..
save on brakes? lol

Thats right..changes shift point.
Sorry for the mislead. Don't drive autos often so I never researched it properly. Cheers for the correction ;)
