Hi,

Gf comes back from uni today with some friends to pick up her laptop and then when they go to drive go back to uni, the car wont start, wont even turn over. I check electrics, even try to jump start it, wont even make a sound. So i try to push start it and once again, not a sound.

Im wondering what could be wrong, i can hear relays clicking, the fuses are ok, i can hear the fuel pump going but it wont even manage a "brr". I turned the engine with a spanner so i know she isnt seized. When in the car i turn it to start i can hear a rather loud relay-like click from the pasenger footwell where i know the cpu is. So could that be my prob? because it must be stopping spark as well as the starter motor, but not the fuel pump. The car isnt immobilised.

Its rather odd because it didnt stop on the side of the road, the car was fine until then.

please help me, im sick of this car, every time somethings fixed it works great for the week or so until something else dies. If its of any note, yesterday we did a few hours of towing a medium sized caged trailer, but ive towed much worse and its worked just fine.

help me plz
-Meph

Sounds like Engine Computer or Dirty spark plugs or Damaged leads..

if it were the spark plugs or leads then it would at least turn over

Battery, swap a battery.Sometime jumper leads are not enough or the wiring on the battery is corroded or broken.

If the battery is good (12V+ across terminals), maybe the starter solenoid decided to pack it in.

Give it a tap to see if it'll wake up. Get a hammer and a 1m long broomstick... need the stick to reach into where the starter motor is hidden behind the engine.

distributor? coil / coil lead?
oh but its not even turning over...hmmmm *thinks harder* starter motor already been mentioned, its the most probable....but if it was the starter you should still be able to push start it, assuming its manual.
the click u hear from the passenger foot well is normal just the ECU turning on/off

collapsed batterys still measure more than enough voltage, however they cannot produce enough current to turn the starter and sometimes even engage the solinoid. Tap the starter with a mallet lightly, make sure your bettery teminals are all fine and the starter is getting power, both constant 12v and ignition 12v (which feeds the solinoid) and then see how it goes. if that fails turn on your lights and get a battery voltage reading. if the lights are on but dull then your battery is stuffed, if they are on and you still get 12v+ from the battery then its probably wiring or ignition barrel

thanks for the replies guys but its fixed.

A few of you suspected the starter, and you were right, however it wasnt the solenoid. Quite simply, one of the wires off the starter fell off. I thought that you'd be able to push start it, but it seemed to stop the spark all together.

Thanks for your help guys, sorry it wasnt anything more complex than a wire.

Thanks

Damned!

I once smacked my TN starter so often, the casing cracked like a piggy bank.

sounds like the fuel pump is gone, and/or ecu is damaged
