Hi just thought id mention that those wanting to change their valve stem seals can probaly
do them themselfs without much problem. I just got quoted between 180-300 $ and did them myself in 2 hrs without much stress. Books recommend air to hold valves up or remove head. This is how I did mine.
Tools required. 12mm socket, spark plug spanner and 22 mm for cam shaft bolt. also box spanner or suitable drift to put seals on. valve compressor or appropriate home made job.
One buy 5 meters of nylon sash cord about 1cm thick. It has to be soft so it does not knot on itself. ( Bunnings $10). stem seals.
How ? remove battery lead - plugs and rotated engine to TDC. number one. remove rockers complete by undoing bolts and lifting out whole unit. If tappets drop out put some grease on them and put them back in.place ina clean dry area.
wind back engine about 45% and feed rope into bore. about 2 mts it should go in without force.
rotate engine till slight pressure is felt. Remove spring and collets buy placeing an appropriate size socket and striking sharp blow on socket or use valve spring compressor it has to be the one that bolts to the top of the motor. could not hire one so improvised with a home made one( email for instructions) . remove spring and seek how far valve go'es into head ( dont push it right in old seal will hold it up). if it appears to far back of engine and feed more rope in wind forward again test and adjust.
If you dont and tap the seal on and drive the valve into the head, then you have to remove the head to pull it back up :doubt:
Remove old seal using long nose plyers. oil up new one and place on. I had an old nylon handle which i drilled to size for the valve stem and slightly larger so the outside of the valve stem seal sat flush. place seal on valve and using jig tap down to seat valve. could use box spanner to ensure seal goes on straight
Using vale compressor replace spring and collet and do other valve. back off engine remove rope . do the rest as above using the firing order ie start at 1,3,4,2 for my 4 cyl.
refit rockers and tighten to torque 18nm. I then rotated engine with plugs out just to check free movment and to blow out any crap nylon rope should not leave aything in bore.
plugs in fired up. nil smoke. Total t 2& 1/2 hrs + 1 x helper for ease.
if you need further contact me via email and I will help. :bowrofl: bazzle21@tpg.com.au
