Ok so my new magna rocks, love it on the higway, averaged about 8.1 lt's per hunderd according to the trip computer.

So now that i'm in town this car sems to be using tooo much fuel. You can almost see the fuel guage go down. I have so far only dove about 160 kms on 20 liters of fuel, that's crap.

So what is the fuel consuption out there, mine is a 2004 TL manual, and i TRY and drive nice but not always posible. This fueal usage seams a bit high to me. Can you guys tell me what you guys are getting.?????????

ALSO i recently noticed that when i switch on the trip comp to instaintanious fuel useage, when i am slowing down in 1 just rolling alond to a stop right before the car stops the fuel usage goes to something rediculasly high like 128 lt/100km's. Can somone else have a look to c if there Magna does it to.

Will reseting the trip computer as per service maual help?

Also has anyone done the self diagnostic feature on any of the Magnas. as per manual it states.

"WHEN USING THE ENGINE WARNING LAMP
(CHECK ENGINE LAMP)
1. Use the special tool ( diagnosis code check harness) to
earth terminal 1 of the diagnosis connector (16 pin).
2. Take a reading of the diagnosis code from the flashing of
the engine warning lamp.
3. Repair the malfunction location while referring to the
Inspection chart for diagnosis trouble codes.
4. After disconnecting the battery cable from the battery (?)
terminal for 10 seconds or more, re?connect the cable.
5. After the engine has warmed up, run it at idle for about 10
minutes."

Has anyone done this, if i just earth out pin 16 to the earth with multimeter leads will it work?

Has anyone got a "MUT-II " these things they seam to refer in the manual to like a hand held dignosis tool.

OK enough questions, and how do you know i'm an enginner, i have had the car 5 days and already want to make something better.

Well if you think about it. The car is still moving and the engine is running (using petrol). So it would take 128lt to go 100km
:D

That's 12.5L/100kms, pretty normal in city.

You've got a 3.5L, not a 3cyl Charade! :)

Instantaneous fuel reading... its X L/100kms, not L/minute or time-based whatever. Its amt of fuel used to travel the last unit of distance (think it samples ever 2 secs?). Do the sums yourself.

Nope.

UHHMMM that is what i said, i know fuel usage is not time based lt, i meant litters.

ALLL i'm getting at why does it go up to a massivly high number when you are rolling to a stop.

to answer
it usess so much because you think about it how long will it take you to travel 100km when going the speed of 1 or 2 km/hr. a long time!
therefore you motor is at an idle speed still on and using gas so if you stayed at that speed and drove 100km it will use 128liters to do that.

All i do is earth pin 1 out to a good earth on the body.I had cut no1 wire then resoldered it so i could use a clip to hook it up.What it does is your check light and the auto light in the dash will flash the code or just flash steadly etc.,

.... instantaneous is exactly that. The fuel your using in that INSTANT. Mine only hits around 20-39ltrs/100kms when accelerating or using gears to slow down. It takes your current fuel usage and says ok... based on this and your distance you traveled your going to use Xltrs to travel 100ks. It has nothing to do with time whatsoever.
Fuel economy (ltrs/100kms) = ((Fuel Used)/(Distance traveled)) * 100
So if you are rolling along, whilst you would take ages to travel 100ks, you are also using hardly any fuel, which is why it will display around 3-4ltrs/100ks.
The only thing I havent been able to figure out is how they determine the economy when you are sitting still at idle...
Whats the average fuel economy say in the city? mine sits around 10-11lts/100ks. I have had 2 cars with trip computers, and the MAX I have ever been able to squeeze out of it was 99ltrs/100ks in my skyline and that was THRASHING it in 2nd. I only ever managed that once.
I get around 600ks out of my 71ltr tank, so if i use your comparison of 20ltrs thats around 170ks, pretty much the same as you and I have a 3.5ltr as well.
Cheers
Pete

*Edit*
Just had a chat to my boss who is a software engineer, and he said that they basically stop calculating when your at idle, but still record the fuel used. I have a funny feeling that my trip computer just displays -- -- when Im idling, but I will have to check that.

yep, it displays "infinity" with --.

At take off... 120+ is not hard, I've had it up to 160 once I think (hehehe... RENTAL TJ).

Me got an engie mind too, I'd rather that silly display actually just display "Litres/min" or
something like that, like what an airplane does. Know exactly what the engine is sipping.

Only the Average should be in L/100km.
