Well I have finished Constructing my Custom Enclosure... I had one similiar in design in my last car, but the MDF Got wet and started to break down..

So it has been 4 weeks in recontruction to Exact specifications ( Sorry about the background I built it in my Dads Shed) that Magnat specifiy, they come with really detailed instructions on what Size MDF to use and how to build it..
It has Magnat Laser Etched onto the Perspex, and is illuminated by Blue Neon on the inside with all wiring sealed so there are no air leaks (Blu tac so if the neons blow they can be easily replaced)

I have Included the Day time shots with this Post and will shoot a night time shot later tonight so you can see the neon illuminate the Chromed Basket and Magnet Cover and the etching..

Its Duel Chambered so each sub has the correct volume (with Allowance for the neon tubes)
The Ports are tuned to 37hz as Magnat has instructed and sounds unreal, it has enough control for Dance and enough Boom for R&B...

So what do you think ???

I will be installing it into my Magna some time in the near future and will post shots once it is installed and secured...

Question, if they go down to spec'ing the thickness of the wood.. what happens when you go replace the thick solid MDF with thin, vibrating perspex?

magnat
19-04-2005, 07:46 AM
The Perpex is 10mm thick and doesn't vibrate at all it is routed into the MDf so the wall itself is completely flat on the inside so as not to vary the internal Volume. The Internal Volume isn't changed so it is as if there is no perspex there at all...

I believe they are!

Magnat wearing Uggies?

:bowrofl:

Edit: are they steel capped Uggies for safety? Could give you a nasty injury if you dropped the box on your foot.......

How did you attach the perspex to the MDF box and seal it? (on the edges and the centre divider in the middle of the box.
What thickness MDF and what grade MDF did you use?
Reason for questions, is I want to have a go at making my own sub box (never made a speaker box before) and would like to have a god at putting some perspex in there as I love the look!!
Cheers

Ok
I used Very sturdy 23mm MDF (MDF is hazardous to your health always use a Mask when cutting or sanding it)

with the use of my Dads tools, Router and Saw, Using the specs Magnat Provided for a Single ported Enclosure, we made up one Box that was a little larger then needed to allow for the middle wall ( which was carpeted during construction) The Front sheet was made with Holes for the Subs and Ports
Carefully measuring the distance bewteen the Sub and the port holes so they wouldn't be out of Phase with each other

I went to a Glazier and asked for the thickest Perspex they had, they told me 10mm was as thick as I would need, Got them to cut it so there was 3 inches from each side of the Rear of the enclosure... I had them Etch the Magnat Name into the perspex while they were at it..
Then the Final Sheet of MDF, was cut out with a lip that allow the perspex sheet to fit flat with the edges that allowed us to Screw and secure the Perpex to the sheet so the screw holes were not visible to the outside.
a Low fume silicone sealant was used to make sure the perpex was air tight.
( Hence the reason for such thick MDF to allow a Reasonable lip)
Nailed and and glued the peices together..
Before adding the Carpet, I used Talcum powder and Two crappy Cheap 12 inch Subs and placed the talcum powder inside, Covered up the ports with Plugs, fired it up and looked for signs of leaks... There were none, Vacummed and wiped out the remaining powder
Cut out sheets of Black Carpet and Secured them to the walls Using Glue and Black Carpet tacs then proceeded with carpeting the outside....
Installed the Neon Tubes with the Box upside down ( Used 8 inch Tubes as most of the work was carried out through the 12 inch Holes, drilled Holes for The Sub wiring and Neons using Blu tac to seal it.).
Installed the Correctly tuned Ports and Subs and Was pleased with the results....

And before anyone asks No, I am not going to be building another Box like this as I want it to be and original once off...
This is my 3rd Box I have built... I have a Large Sealed 10 inch Wedge Shaped enclosure that I used to use for my JVC Strobo cone....
and I built a Custom one for a friend who has a Datsun 1200 Ute so I buit and enclosure so he could have a 6 inch Sub between his seats, it was no larger then a shoe box.

Uggies are the ultimate in comfort when you are spending most early mornings and nights working in a Cold Shed with a Concrete floor, a Project like this requires the utmost in comfortable foot ware.... 4 weeks for 2 hours a day, before work and after it..

All Up Materials Cost me $280, with the Perpex being the dearest part at $130 ( Etching and Cutting and holes Drilled in it)

The Secret to box building is patience and time, Trial and error...
Try a Simple Sealed enclosure first, then Ported and there is no way in hell I am doing a Bandpass !!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers, Thanks heaps for all the info!!
I want to stick with sealed as im after sql and like their sound better.
Would a $80 router from bunnings do the job? I dont wanna have to buy an expensive one.
The rest of the tools I have.

Damn thats heaps for a box. Esp a home made one... Where did u buy ur stuff from. Perspex isnt that exxy, and most laser etching is like $30.
I take it you took the loss in volume that the etching takes up in ur calculations lol j/k

Looks like a job well done. Money well worth it.

Did u play around with any other box sizes in ur car? Cabin gain etc? Would be interesting to see how good the orginal specs are in a boot as large as a Magna on an RTA.

Awaiting the night shots...

Peace

Tim

Yeah, I have to admit it was alot of effort for an enclosure, But only the Best will do for my Magnat Sub and besides if you build it your self at least you know the enclosure has been built to suit the subs and not just any old Enclosure..
And I have yet to see an enclosure that is on the shelf that looks as good s it does..

I have messed around with other enclosures, but not in the Magna...

The Last db Test I got done was in my 1987 Holden Astra sedan and it managed 128.2db SPL
from my Home built Ported enclosure which housed Two Pioneer Diamond plate subs
( Done for Free at JB Hifi in Phillip in the ACT when they first opened)
Lucky all my Decks I have ever used have come with remote control as I would hate to be in the car when it is that loud..

Night shots will come as soon as it is Dark enough....

In most SPL comps ur allowed in ur car as long as it's under 140db.

Dats crazy....

Well I powered the Neons with a weak 9 volt Battery so they are not exactly as bright as they would be in the car, the Etching doesn't appear in the Camera but does with the human eye so I am a tad dissapointed (2MP Camera doesn't help either)

But at least you get an Idea of what it looks like...... I intend to mount it so the perspex can be Viewed through the ski port..
The Photo's don't really do it any justice...

I know what thats like, I sneezed while installing my Splits and put the Screw driver through the Cone....Need to upgrade them... The Hole is temporarily covered by black gaffer tape and so far no signs of sound degration but I will need to replace them as soon as the Funds come in...

I had my 15 tuned to 30hz, and i found that output didn't sound that great, so i modified the ports so now its tuned to about 45hz(dodgey cutting, lol) sounds better, and heaps louder.

mmmmmm.....I want to get rid of my 15 and get a 10 or something that'll handle 1100wrms, in a tiny sealed box....redo my boot too, lol, i haven't finished it and i'm sick of it already.

I want to see what numbers it will pull!!
