Hey guys,

Just wondering if any one had put speakers in the roof of a wagon. I notice that there are sorta square bulges in the wagon roof in the cargo area that look like they could be designed for speakers. I was wondering if anyone had put speakers in there and knows if there is enough clearance and if so, how do i get the roof down abit at the back so i can have a look myself.

Well actually the standard OEM location for rear speakers in the wagon is the roof!

I personally don't know what the depth is because I don't feel like ripping out the roof trim yet.

You'll get a mix response from the guys here. Most will say that you won't get any bass out of it, which is quite true. Personally i've heard NiceM8's setup with the speakers in the roof and well midrange is really nice. So if roof speakers are to be used, I'd recommend adding a subwoofer to the package.

Really, that is very interesting, hmmmm maybe i should move mine to there. :D

they sound pretty poo up there.... :( There's almost literally NO clearance between the magnet and roof either. Plus, any volume at all makes your entire roof fart. Not the easiest place to deaden, so my advice... try something else if you are interested in any type of sound other than what comes out of a tinny AM radio.

Hi there. I have speakers in my roof. Sony 3 way 6"s. Fit fine. Mine came with speakers already fitting, so i just made a minor modification to the bracket. The midrange sound is quite nice. Sub would make it better tho

Where is the bracket mounted is it on the roof? Also wouldn't you need spacers cos it doesn't look like there's enough room for them up there? I'm running pioneer 6x9's in boxes in the back of my wagon at the moment and they sound pretty damn good an amazing amount of bass for their size so I don't think I'd move them.

I looked at several options, and ended up cutom-making my own pods which bolt to my crash barrier. Was originally going to mount them above the blind thing, but the GF reckoned it looked dicky, so mounted them below instead. Still get decent sound, mainly wanted them (6x9s) to add a bit of surround, and a bit of bass. May add a cheap sub back there at some stage.
Didn't check out the roof. Checked out the side panels, but the cutouts there are asymetrical, so you'd probably have to cut metal to get the speakers in the same spot on both sides.

You'd be right in saying they are not the same, and yes you do have to cut metal. But it is only 2 or 3 cm that needs to go, nothing structural.

No, I didnt need to put spacers in. Infact, it sits further in than the stock speakers did. I tried putting in 6x9"s, (given to me my neighbor), so i cut the metal bracket meant to hold the speakers. Went to fit them, and they were too deep. Would of need a custom surround, and i couldnt be bothered to do that. So, I made up some plywood things that mounted to the bracket and the speaker. if anyone wants some photos, ill take a couple tomorrow. It was easy to do, just getting the brackets in/out was a *****. Had to lower most of the roof to get at all the screws for the brackets. Not hard to do, just fiddley......

Hmmm, so the general thoughts are that the roof speakers give okay mid range but not bass - Damn :doubt: !!! I like Bass - and I have a set of speaker mounts out of a Verada Wagon ready for speakers one day. Guess a Sub may be needed.

Friend of mine used to have a TS Wagon and he had 6x9s installed into the roof at those 2 bulge areas. They sounded sh|t to say the least. A wagon is a poor environment for car audio unless you pack it absolutely full of speakers; I suggest a set of powerful 2 way splits for the front doors running off an amp, then just stick a sub in the rear cargo area and you will have a good balanced system.

If you want some rear end fill, incorporate a small separate chamber inside the sub box that you can install a pair of small 6" co-ax speakers into; just run these 2 off the head unit.

sorry i dont have a pic of the roof speakers , i have pioneer 220w 3 way in the roof but you wont fit 6 x 9 in the braket so i have used round ones and as you can see a 10 inch sub

i only run mid range and treble to them and put most the bass to the sub , but as said you need good front splits to help it , iwould like to put a set of 6x9 in the back one on each side of the sub or make a box to go right across the back

verada wagon speaker mounts eh? They any different to regular speaker mounts? Not sure - I just got these out of a wrecked Verada. I guess they are the same as any OEM Mitsu ones - they have the Speakers, the Covers (fabric) & Mounting Brackets (just need to replace the speakers with something better  ). I'll take a photo and post it soon.

...A wagon is a poor environment for car audio unless you pack it absolutely full of speakers; ...Great idea if you don't have a Dickie Seat in the back (fitting a sub is going to be fun to start with :doubt: ) - but that's long term dreams at the moment anyway.

hey guys. i just finished installing my new system to the magwgn and it pumps. i got a new pioneer deck, 2 amps, a 10" sub and rear 6" speakers plus my front splits i already had. i mounted the new speakers into the rear side panels. i did have to cut a small piece of metal out on the left hand side but it was quite easy. the deck only had 1 set of rca outputs so im running the whole setup of the rear channel but with a bit of tunning it makes no difference. the rca feeds to the new pioneer 4 channel amp, with the front splits running on 2 channels then the other two are bridged to the sub. then i ran an output to the second 2ch amp to run the rears. all and all, after a few hiccups with the wiring (including a bloody rca lead that didnt work!!!!) it was a fairly easy install and im really happy with the results, and for just over a grand it has been great value for money! i just moved house so once im settled ill take some pics and post them up.

Okay - I have the headunit (not installed yet) and I'm still to get speakers. I had a chat to a couple of reputable ICE places in the city and a local one - they both have no concerns with the roof speaker idea (other than getting the roof lining down). In fact one said that it should be better as long as it was just rear backfill rather than out'n'out first line punch. They suggested a good set of speakers - something like Boston, JL or Focal. 6" to 6.5" in the front doors, 5" in the rear roof and a small to medium sub in the back. They didn't mention amps but I guess that goes without saying. I expect I'll go without the amp & sub to start with - baby steps (for my wallet).

Has anyone got a good set of rear roof speakers that sound good (or bad)?

Sounds great mate!
What speakers are you putting in?
Where's the subs going (I presume in the rear wagon part where exactly & facing where?
Keep us informed on how you go & what they sound like.

i had to make up a mdf brace so that the magnets from my reponse precision 5" would fit in the roof, and i had to hack away at the old grill covers but it looks and sounds pretty cool now.. ill post pics tomorrow night. The subs are gunna go derectly behind the back seat, where the wheel arches are. I still need the room for my bass gear... cant wait.. its al sounding very top heavy at the moment.. needs some 10" oomph to shake the room... all the speakers im using are precision response... a little bonus from working at jaycar... I also just finished making a board for the 800w class d and cap to sit on.. cant wait.. just gotta get enough spare time from the girlfriend.. thats the hard part!

What were the measurements (depth) of the speakers you used for the roof?

The speakers I'm looking at are 57.2mm in depth. Will I hit the same probs?
I can go for a slimline version which is 53mm if needed (but would rather not).

the main reason i needed to make spacers was the mounting holes were completely different sizes. i think they were around 70mm deep but cant be sure... ill try and post some pics of it.. hang on...
