Hi All,

I've noticed my car is going through an excessive amount of power steering fluid. I also noticed to night that there is power steering oil toward the back of the engine and on the metal "tray" directly under the drivers side CV boot. The steering has also begun to have a slight rubbing vibrating sound when parking.

Would it be the rack or the pump that is on the way out?? what sort of $$$ will I be up for?

Many thanks in advance.

Had the same problem. Get yourself Lucas Power steering leak stop from Repco , it works. It might take few days to stop leaking but I haven't had a leak sice I used it. Unless your power steering is totally f*****.

Mines leaking too apparently.

Only slightly. Leaking around the rack bit - and was dripping on to some crossmember?

Hope it doesn't cost $1000 to fix! Mechanic was guessing $400-500. :S

Yeah my KH slightly leaks on the front drivers side cross member under the rack. It is the rack leaking but it is so slow that the power steering fluid doesnt drop much. Just ****s me having wet oil under the car.
Was quoted about $600 for memory for the rack from either pedders or Mitsub. Have a contact at Mitsub so he could get it for me for $400 cost price which is aparently cheap and you dont have to swap with your old one like pedders want you to do. Havent fixed it though. Hard to justify $400 plus fit when steering works fine. Just get the degreser out every now and then.

yeah should be aroung 5-600 for the part unless you know people  then labour i went to a mechanic and he said 400 bucks to fix........ there were no cars at his workshop or in the carpark so i went to mitsu and asked, and with a price quote that different i pretty much gatehered why he had no business lol

but the question is....if its leaking...is it cheaper to over the long term to keep topping it up or get it fixed....

do not mess with leaking racks, but you should clean the area, run it for a while and then have a look, may be a hose or pump, if rack will usually leak further down
