I'm new here everyone, i don't know much about front wheel drive cars, but here goes.
I just bought a 2.6L TM magna for $200 with rego on the weekend.
It drives great, dosen't blow any smoke, all i had to do was replace the clutch, which set me back another $133.
The problem i have is coolant is leaking from the side of the motor, just behind the alternator.
what is this part called?
The part is cast iron and has a small hole in it.
Also will i need to remove the head and the sump to replace it, if i don't that would be great, but looks quite doubtful.

welsh plug? pics would help. i didn't think water went behind the block over that side

if its red collant it might actualy be power stearing fluid from were that is, becasue thats the only thing i can think of the would leak over there cept oil

If you have a coolant leak from around the alternator then it is either the welch plug in the block under the exhaust manifold or it is coming from the blanked off hole in the timing case, either way corrosion has probably caused it, if you do remove the engine to fix it then replace all the welch plugs and flush the sludge from the block at the same time then refill with good coolant

im not sure what the part is called but it's not the p/steer and it's not a welsch plug.

the leak is on the front side of the motor, and the motor is still in the car.

that hole in the pic is in the timing case. it can be replaced in the car by removing the sump or head but is a tricky job, as i suggested before best to remove the engine and replace the timing case and all the welch plugs at the same time, if the timing case has coroded right thru they won't be far behind and will probably leak soon.

It looks like water pump to me..

ok thanks benau, i thought it might have been that, it just seems different to what i've worked with.
do i have to do the timing chain as well?
im' gonna attempt to remove the timing case with the motor in the car, if it is really hard, i suppose i'll have to take it out.

You will have to replace the timing chain case, probably more corrosion inside

anyone know what sort of $$$ im looking at for the chain case, sump gasket, etc?

ok thanks benau, i thought it might have been that, it just seems different to what i've worked with.
do i have to do the timing chain as well?
i've noticed the rocker gasket and sump gasket are leaking, and was hoping to fix this while the motor is in the car.
im' gonna attempt to remove the timing case with the motor in the car, if it is really hard, i suppose i'll have to take it out.
besides the timing case, sump gasket and coolant, is there anything else i will need?
thanks for your help all.
If your going to do just the timing case (t'case) then you will need a replacement t'case. sump and t'case gaskets, t'case/crank seal, coolant, new oil.
I havent remove the t'case in car in a 1st gen but in a 2nd gen it's easier if you undo the rear gearbox mount so you can move the front of the engine up and down on a jack.
it's a good to replace the timing chains while your in there but if there quiet it's up to you.
if you replace the rocker cover gasket replace the rear cam seal and "half moon" as well

It looks like water pump to me..
HAHAAH you dont know much about the astron do u
the water pump is on the other side of the motor and there external not internal :bowrofl:

im still trying to work out what or who caused the hole, its in the wrong place for chain rubbing it looks like somone shot it to put it out of is missery?
mad lanté send me your rims i want a set for my GT cant find them :bowrofl:
Yes. Another one of the Astron FWD design flaws.

hmm how so??
when u think about it its not that bad....when it breaks easy to change then internal and u dont have coolent in your motor, also its easy to change the belt

eww you dont want my ugly rims get some tn elite ones or TP elante ones

if your lazy like me i reckon just go down to repco, get a tube of that quik steel putty and carfully bung some of that on the hole. It sets real hard and seems to cope fine with temperature, i fixed an old rocker cover where a big chunk broke off . i tried hard to break it where it broke before and it wouldnt break. its still holding up 3 months later.

The flaw is more the way it's driven. There's a reason to not drive a waterpump off a camshaft.
The other would have to be the silent shaft/oil pump relationship.

Yes. Another one of the Astron FWD design flaws.
it is a design flaw!!! the timing case is a modified version of the one to suit a RWD sigma. The hole for the FWD water pump is blanked off at the front of the timing case (where the hole is in the pics) and not at the block face. The Alloy timing case is exposed to coolant and corodes when there is no need for it.
It was probably made like this just to save on casting costs but MMAL had to modify the rear of the magna block for the waterpump  they could have blanked off the coolant gallery in the front of the block too.

no guesses where it broke off yet another great idea from mitsubishi

I made that hole bigger, it wasn't that big.
how much should the timing case set me back?

check your engine oil to see if the coolant hasn't found it's way there. A timing chain case will not cost much, a few dollars

no water in engine oil
that was the first thing i checked.

a cheap and nasty fix would be a rubber grommet and some blue liquid gasket

epoxy steel, i know people who use this to smooth out manifolds on go karts.
