Okay, heres the story so far.
My cars been to Heidelburg Mitsubishi twice about the crunchy 1-2 and 2-1 gear transfers.
First time they topped up gear box oil which did absolutely nothing. Second time I left it there over night and they said the gear box was "notchy". They also said they felt shuddering in 2nd and reverse gears. (I notice it in first on take offs, especially on cold nights)

Now I don't think that the gearbox should be "notchy", especially considering its age.
They told me that they can pull out the gearbox and look at the pressure plate, but if the clutch is worn, they will slug me $1200 for a new clutch.
Each time they seem to be sidestepping the gearbox issue.

I'm lucky I live somewhat out in the sticks as it means I don't have to use 1st and 2nd all that much. I dread going into town.
With the window down its quite noticable, I've even heard this ****ing horrid zip sound when changing gears. (the two cogs slipping).

Tomorrow I will be calling head office to speak to someone in customer relations to see if I can get something sorted out.

I'm just wondering how many of you manual drivers out there have clunk sounds on 1-2 and 2-1 gear changes when the box is cold AND hot.
(main focus group is the TJ owners, unless the box is the same across the 3rd gen range)

Well as i said in the TL gearbox post, mine dose this too. Although it's a newer car, the gearbox still crunches, especially around 2000 rpm and then at 3500 rpm. Funny, i am going to husstle the **** out of my dealer to get it fixed. I think all of us on this forum should make an effort to call the main office or somone in the know to complain about the issue.

Mine does it, but then again it is a 96 TE

I have to change at the correct RPM to avoid it.. Race changing makes the passengers shudder...

Mines an auto and does it sometimes when you slow down clunks from 2nd into 1st.

got a similar crunch, (not to much of an issue at the moment as it's only for the first 5 mins or so of use of the car)
some days i can get around it by playing the gear changes very softly, but other times it don't matter how careful i am, crunch, there so goes ;)

I have the same issue, got slightly better after they replaced the gear box oil with VMX80 (not sure what was in there before).

Try some Redline gear box oil and see if that helps, it's great oil apparently and all the skyline croud I know use the light weight shock proof stuff and swear that they will never go back.

Anyone know what weight/viscosity is "supposed" to be used in Manual Magna transmissions?

Okay well I got a call from Alan today, and he said that he noticed the crunching, so they are replacing the syncro rings. Thank **** its almost over.
Tell you what, if you guys have any problems with bigger items such as gearboxes, etc, go straight to the service manager and bypass all the service peons.

It's got me thinking, could it be that the original owners gave the cars too much of a flogging during the run-in period that has caused so many of you guys, with relativly new cars, to have such crunching sounds?

Alright, just an update. Dropped the car off on monday, was ready yesterday arvo, picked it up today. Its a hell of alot better now. No crunching at all at low revs which was the biggest problem.
Reverse seems a little harder to get into, but that doesnt bother me.
You guys are right, second gear is a little bit notchy, but it shouldn't crunch. If it does and you're still under warranty take it back!
