Hey Guys, this is a vigin experience for me.
Im looking to get my first car in about 5months or so. Im not sure what im doing for my System as of yet, all that i know is that i want to make heads turn wen i pull up behind em and traffic lights
My mate has offere me 2 x12" SPL Mules for $250. I heard these in his and they sounded awesome at about half power, he has a proffesional install though. My question is, are these subs any good and will they sound good if they are not proffesionally installed???

Thanx for your help Guys, hopefully this is a start to many good and helpfull post's.

Initially; can I be so bold to suggest that you don't build your system for the enjoyment of other people around you. I say this for two reasons. One is that you'll damage your hearing and the other is you'll attract the attention of angry people / the cops.

Now regarding your system, what is your budget? Two 12" subwoofers for $250 (new) does not sound like an overly high quality investment to begin with. Remember also to factor other things in such as:

* An amplifier to run the system.
* Quality cable to run the amplifier.
* The subwoofers need a solid enclosure.
* A decent quality source.

You might want to review your requirements of being heard three blocks away for now until the buget is a tad higher and concentrate on high quality clean sound that you yourself can enjoy. In answer to your question, yes subs sound terrible if they're not installed correctly because sadly, you cannot simply chuck any old sub into any old enclosure. ;)

I run 2x 12" 800w Pioneer Subs w/ a 1000w mono block amp. These do the job well enough shake the hell out of your car and can be heard from a fair way away. I think there most powerful subs pioneer make that are non-competition. i think UNDER8D has the same subs but i think she is chainging to more powerful

Cul8tr, can you post the model number and specs of your 800 watt subs please? :)

They are second hand and are still good wuality, no scratches or anything. i dont have a full time job but that put aside i think that my budget is pretty good for someone in my situation.
Im not building my system for other ppl, i love heavy stuff so i want some subs to go with it.
my budget is about $1500 so hopefully i should be able to get some good quality stuff now coz the new models are coming out. I could get a sony CDX M8800, RRP:999, for $499 and that has some good spec's, especially for the reduced price.

Its best to look at spending more money on the components that will give you better sound, not bling, as an expensive head unit will. So with a budget such as yours, I would be spending more like $200 - 300 on an head unit, just make sure it has MP3 functions and thats all you really need. No amount of BMX equalizers and bling bling functions are going to make your system sound good if you don't have decent speakers in the first place.

You will want to spend a decent portion of that budget on your front speakers, assuming that you want your system to sound decent to you, and not just pumping some bass tones for everyone else to hear. For a budget like yours, I would be spending around $300-400 on front splits (check what size your existing stock speakers are).

You have your sub's already for $250, so now you just want to look at getting a decent amp to power them, have a look at the Jaycar range of Response Amps, power per dollar is quite good.

Account $150 - $200 for sound deadening and cabling.

yeah, ive allready checked out the other components of my system and its looking pretty good so far. I prolly will get an amp from jaycar. there cheap and apparently good quality also.
Can't wait to get it all set up and thump some tunes :D
