The last couple of days, I've noticed a mild "pop" sound, like a mild mis-fire coming from the engine/exhaust at low speeds, and it only seems to happen after I've just gone around a corner or a round-about.

As I accelerate out of the corner in second gear, I can hear a single 'pop' sound. In straight line accleration it never seems to happen. And it doesn't happen on every corner either, just about 50% of the time. It's got me stumped - I can't get it to do it stationary, revving the engine etc. Performance seems unaffected, but the car shouldn't be making this sound.

Any ideas before I take it to the mechanics??

umm could it be backfire ?

although i believe i have a bit of back pressure in my exhaust do you get this say when you restrict your speed down a hill through your gears?? like it bubbles??? as far as i know this is normal but.....

i get that in my exhaust after i change gears, and when you say you get it... how loud is the popping noise? is it like a little rumble kinda cough or is it a big bang?

i thought it was normal so ill be watching this topic now lol :D

It has only come on since Friday Arvo. I absolutely didn't hear it before that.

The noise is not super loud, ie. not like a back-fire, but loud enough to hear as a single dull 'pop' sound from inside the car with the windows up.

what kind of exhaust setup have u got?

the popping sound is made when you have unspent fumes exiting through your catalytic converter.

Your car is either..

a) running rich
b) being flogged and then backing off the loud pedal
c) cat could be on its way out..

Does it sound like this? (http://members.optusnet.com.au/miltonf/car/BainsExhaust.wma) Note the popping sound.. This is when i would rev the car out of gear to excessive levels (5k) and then back off.. It would make a popping, burbling sound.

Lots of popping is a quick way to make your cat deteriorate at a faster rate..

Thanks Bain, and nice sounding audio file BTW.

Engine is standard Ralliart, with factory exhaust system.

At this stage it is only a single 'pop', in either second gear or occasionally on change up to third.

The weird thing is, it only seems to happen after I've come out of a turn. It doesn't do it in straight line acceleration or slowing-down/speeding up while going straight ahead. I can't figure out why it only occurs a couple of seconds after completing a turn (eg coming out of a corner or coming out of a round about).

Wheres your revs at the point of change when you downshift or upshift? Is the car being driven grampa style or properly (3500 - 4500rev gear changes?)

Ive found if u unplug the speed sensor from the gear box you will get the popping sound.. dont know what it is though... :D

i tend to get massive popping from the exhaust on my motorbike when it is spinning at high revs and i back of the throttle. sounds like pop pop, pop pop pop. caused by overfueling and unburnt gas burning when it hits the air on the way out of the exhaust. however motorbikes dont have cats.

While I've been monitoring this, I've been doing grandpa gear changes when coming out of corners, so it's happening at around 2500-3000 rpm.

As I said though, just a single pop, not the pop, pop, pop... that some of you get at high rpm.

As I said though, just a single pop, not the pop, pop, pop... that some of you get at high rpm. There could be a small hole somewhere along your exhaust system.

Other than that.. Im out of ideas as to what it could be..

Maybe its like a Jedi mind trick.. its always been there but youve never noticed it.. Now that youve noticed it, you are trying to hear it each time you change a gear..

Is it when yu have a lowish tank of fuel, after the corner alittle after the apex,a slight drop in power (or lag).

If so we are in a Quest together.

Took my car back to Mitsu, and it turned out the noise was from a couple of very slightly loose bolts in the suspension housing, which were making a popping noise during turns (must be those 5G turns I've been pulling!).

Given the car has only done relatively low km, I wasn't expecting bolts to have worked loose, but it was an easy fix and something to watch out for on other TJs etc.

I also spoke to the service manager about the "crunch" noise that sometimes happens when the air con comes on. It's a well-known problem on TJ and TL cars. It's related to a bubble of gas that sometimes gets in the system and makes a noise as it's moved through when the compressor switches on. Basically, there's no fix, just a fact of fife on those models.
