View Full Version : shifting from reverse to drive
hi, i have an '03 TL VRX (not an AWD) AUTO, i've noticed that after reversing out the driveway and shifting into drive there's a pretty vicious, almost lurching, type sensation when you take off. it appears to be getting slightly worse as time goes by but i'm not sure if that's just me preparing for it.
it doesn't appear to be happening when you just go from park to drive, ie just drive off forwards after being parked.
just wondering if this is normal or if something might be wrong? and what might be wrong if it's not normal?

are you still rolling backwards as you change into drive?
ive noticed in my dads magna that if i roll backwards too fast and switch to drive it gives a pretty nasty jerk.

i believe in your manual it states to have you foot on the brake when your changing gear from P-D R-D but not L-2-3-D so the car is not moving so less stress on your gear box
yeah technically corrent to stop before switching from R - D or visa versa... otherwise its just gonna whack the gears in with a clunk... u cant ease it on like u could with a manual clutch

yah, i get this clunk/lurch whenever im leaving somewhere fast and im still rolling a little bit when i put into D, but when i remember i make surei stop first and its smooth
the previous car was a manual so you could be right that we aren't completely stopping when reversing out. will have to remember to make sure it's completely stopped before shifting it to drive and see if that helps. thanks.
