Sup guys,
Every now and then the battery light will come on and my headlights, illuminious dials and neons get slightly brighter. When it turns off all of those go back to being less bright, im a bit concerned because the head lights dont seem very bright, even with high beam on.

I was thinking my battery is on the edge of dying? Its a Kmart one so i wouldnt be supprized. The wires n shiz are firmly connected to the battery, so its not that.

battery light means the alternator isnt charging.........
although if your lights get brighter it could be overcharging....i never found out whether the light comes on if its overcharging aswell as undercharging.....
the problem there could be the Voltage regulator on the alternator....these go for aroudn $80 new.......a new alternator is around $180-$200....a reconditioned one is about the same FITTED,
i got one from a wreckers for $45 and it has been going for nearly 2 years now.

It does sound like overcharging, but as Samurai said, I didn't realise the light was that smart to know that it was 'overcharging'

Anyway the regulator would be the prime component to look at first, hightly doubt it would be the whole alternator at fault.

Antone, if the charge light is coming on sometimes then going out and the headlights get brighter when it goes out then it is most likely worn brushes on the voltage regulator in the back of the Alternator.
simple test for worn brushes is with engine running, shake the plug on the back of the regulator so you gently rock the regulator in the alternator housing and look ito see if the brushes spark inside the alternator. if they do spark then they are worn out. Worn brushes wont always spark.
The Regulator is held in by two flat blade screws and easy to replace in car if you can get past the ex manifold with a 90 deg bent screwdriver etc, or remove the alternator from the car. (disconnect the Battery)
Yesterday I bought a new genuine Bosch regulator for $35 trade from my local Auto Elec, there about $50 retail.

ok looking at that pic, in the pic you can see at the lower front just behind the radiator a silver cover with mitsubishi stamped in it, this is the "exhaust manifold heat shield". Beside it on the RHS of the PIC (LHS of car) on the front of the engine is a cylindrical silver object that is belt driven and has fan blades on the pulley. This is the "alternator". the "regulator" is the black box screwed into the back of the alternator. PM me for more details or i have a loose alternator and regulator I can take pics and send to u.

remember there is permanant contact between the battery+ and the alternator *disconnect battery first*
