dont u just hate it wen u do something to your car and it doesnt work out as planned! :(

i jst had a Jun Bl muffler installed today and it sounds s@#$ house! cosmetically it looks great but it is soo loud and wen i accelerate hard it makes a tinny bubbly sound (kinda sounds like a rotory). wen im just cruzin along it sounds nice its just wen i go to accelerate it sounds crap. i'm pretty dissappointed, i thought Jun Bl was supposed to be a renowned quality brand??????

Q: i dont hav a resontor atm, so if i put one back in do u think, apart from quietening down th sound, that it may rid th tinny sound if not a bit but completely.? :?

oh yeah, i kno that sometimes if u get a new muffler u hav to let it settle but this has already been on a car???

My muffler had come off a car and when I first put it on it was load and dronnie.
After a couple of weeks it quieted down and now is not too bad...
It is pretty dronnie while under labour.. like in 3rd and doing 60 and accelerating.
Haydn

Give it a little while longer and see what happens.
If you put the resonator .. tehn it will quiet it down ... but Im unsure if it will stop the sound you are describing.

haha, yeah valid point booya, ill give ya that one

yeah i guess its just a matter of waiting and c'ing, fingers crossed it improves.

oh yeah, a bit of info that i dont kno if you all know or not. the magnas do come with a 2 1/2 mandrel system stock, but the piping that goes over the axel actually tapers down to about 2 1/4 or less even, so i also had some 2 1/2 inch piping put in to replace the stock but instead of going over the axel it kinda goes under/around it and is actually a straighter path. there's definately slight increase in performance from this. btw i did have a straight thru muffler before this one but it was a cheapy. just thought id tell wat ive found out :)

i had the same problem.
what i did was change the bit of flex pipe, which is before the catlic, and got a hotdog installed to quiet the thing up.
the reson i changed the bit of flex pipe was because i cracked it, and whenever i accelarated all i could hear was a rattle.

I spent a whole day in an exhust shop with a bottle of scotch and went through about 8 - 10 mufflers on my car to get the best sound out of it. Took a while but it got the best result. I don't like those big jap mufflers, they look the goods but always drown on a magna and sound somewhat bad

I like the humble look of my 2.5 inch, unpolished, stainless steel pipe coming out the back of mine. The Lukey sounds great and there's probably a few drivers who think I've done something cheap and nasty.

When I got mine installed it was new, so they just put up about 4 different mufflers so I could hear what they sounded like till I found one I did like, that is the beauty of buying new I suppose.

Try X Force ;) Fully stainless, polished. Nice aggro  sound and not too noisy. But you still might need to replace the middle resonator to bigger.
Tends to resonate at 1800 RPM.
But that stops when u get RPW Race Headers...

Resonator's job is to eliminate - well, air resonations. The bubbly and blabbering noises, to even them out. To put it very simply.
Muffler it self is basically a silencer.

See, once engine throws out the exhaust blow, it comes in series of explosions. At certain rev range they start to resonate and that makes the annoying baffling/humming (or which ever way you wanna describe it) sound. Resonator evens them out to provide steady, not bubbly exhaust flow.. doesn't really silence that much, only a bit

Good luck.
(One guy once asked me how to make a 2.2 Vectra sound like Rex or V8 -I'm still holding my laughter...) :?

yeah well im getting a resontor 2moro, so i'll let u kno how goes

in the second post where i mentioned about the exhaust size, i actually looked at a couple of later model magnas on the weekend and they have a similar set up around the axel to wat i now have and in 2 1/2 inch piping. i'm guessing its just the TE"s that the exhaust goes over the axel. jst thought i better correct myself on that one

I have both a TE and a TH Sports... and the sports has an up and oer exgaust piping...
All Magnas AFAIK have this design.

Yeah, they should do. Otherwise my bolt on muffler wouldn't work for just any TE and onwards.

yep..........I LOVE RESONATORS! the difference its made is awsum! this is kinda how the conversation went when i went back to the exhaust place.

ME: hey man how are ya? yeah look my car sounds like s!@# hey!
EXHUAST GUY: yeah when i heard you take off the other nite i thought geez that sounds terrible! i knew you'd be back so i've got in the biggest resonator i could get my hands on.

result 20 minutes later............200% improvement! :D :D no more whinny bubbly sound when i accelerate, woohoo! :D it still doesn't sound as deep as i would like tho. dont know how to explain the sound, i guess it kinda sounds racy. performance wise it doesnt seem to have caused any loss of power which is wat was expected anyway. and as far as loudness goes it has only quietened it slightly. so to summarise, in my situation, the resonator ist goot!

i was told from my mechanic and the exhaust guys that 2 1/2 was to big for what the engine produces (would be sluggish down low and cause alot more drone) 2 1/4 would be ideal, mines from the cat back with one resonator into a xforce muffler cannon style (sb05) and it is droney under accleration but as soon as u lift off its much quieter, when i rev hard and let off i do get a throaty sort of sound but i like it its very aggressive up in the rev range.

Same here, When I decided on MagnaFlow, I couldn't decide whoich one is best.. so I got all of them...

thought there was a big topic on the size of the muffler,
and they come stock with a 2.5"

Killbilly

Yeah I was thinking something about that 2 1/4 comment.

If 2 1/2 is too big, why did they come out with a 2.5" stock?

The engineers at MMAL know what they're doing...2.5 is optimal for the Magna, esp the 3.5l

Depends on the model. My TF is generally 2.4'.

2.4,2.5 same thing! :P

It's almost 2.5 It's definitely bigger than 2.25!

For a N/A TR 2.6L, with the only other mods being an air filter, whats a good sounding, twin tipped (not twin piped thats gay), shiny exhaust to get :)

im not really bothered about the amount of performance i get out of it, just want it to sound cool

well i dont know about the the front half of the ehaust to the cat or what the 3.5 size are but with mine which is a tf 3.0l V6 its 2 1/4 from the cat back stock, therefore no reason to go any bigger unless your gonna make more power in the engine.

hmmmm :-k i find this rather interesting??????

i have a TE with the 3.0 and it is definately 2 1/2 from the cat, hence why i changed the bit that went to 2 1/4 over the axel to 2 1/2. my car has always been a bit sluggish down low anyway but i think that the top end has actually improved ever so slightly. thats also prob due to my new k & n panel filter. (keep in mind i used to have a straight thru muffler welded onto the stock exhaust before i changed it to the new piping and jun bl muffler). are you sure the piping is only 2 1/4 stock on yours????? :?

this is confusing me now, this is what i was told from the people in the know( from my boss who works on dragsters to the performance exhaust specialist), i went on and on about which was better 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 they said 2 1/4 for sure, i will find definetley tomorrow what is going on

If you're thinking of swapping your piping, I wouldn't worry about it. Making it smaller or bigger won't gain anything. So, spend your money elsewhere.

yeah well u would think they know wats going on huh. well all i know is i got up under my car when it was on the hoist and have seen it with my own eyes and it is definately a 2 1/2 system stock. but maybe all they were getting at was the difference in gains from the two were small enough to not worry about a bigger exhaust???????? i got told that making it 2 1/2 the whole way would give me a bit more "top end". but i aint no expert either ;)

Redav
15-08-2003, 07:48 PM
it is definately a 2 1/2 system stock.

Mandrel bent too. If you were to 'upgrade' the stock piping to a 2 1/2 cat back job, the biggest gain you'd see would be purely the muffler. The stock piping is good enough so spend the money elsewhere.
