G'day I was just wondering if anyone here has done much work with carbon fibre? If you have could you put down what types of material you used. ie resins what you used for a mould etc.
I think that using carbon fibre is roughly the same as fibreglas so if you've made a bodykit, air intake what ever, help would be appreciated.
Thanks heaps

CF ain't too easy - you need a suitable mold and it's gotta be all
heated in an oven under pressure whilst it cures.

CF matting is also very bad for your health, when handling need respiratory protection.

And if you think CF always comes with a fancy "CF pattern", got bad news for you.
CF matting is black; the fancy crosshatch pattern is just printed on the top surface.

I've looked into it and you can either buy the fabric preimpregnated with the resin or just the fabric. The preimregnated stuff needs the pressure oven treatment but the plain fabric you add the resin the same way as with fibreglass. The preimp method gives a stronger bond but as I would just be making things like airboxes and poss panels/trim it wouldn't be weight bearing so I could just add the resin myself.

Also you should wear a proper dust mask whenever working with ANY fibre products. ESPECIALLY carbon fibre or fibreglass as both can cause asbestosis.

I was thinking of using a carbon fibre/kevlar woven fabric which would give the crosshair pattern.

Sorry for shooting your post down though.

Come on! Someone must have done some work with carbon fibre or fibreglass. I just need some basic info on what to make moulds out of etc.

does working with fibre glass cause asbestosis, just wondering as i have mates all the time repairing their own body kits with it and they never wear any sort of protection

Yeah it can. It's not as bad as working with asbestos but people that work on fibreglass have been known to get asbestosis. I think it's caused by very small fibres and sillicon particles, that when inhaled cut up the lung lining. I haven't worked with fibreglass much but I have done a lot of work with mixing cement and I always wear a mask. A good quality mask isn't too uncumfortable and if it helps my lungs stay healthy then it's worth the money spent.
