Ok guys ive chosen a sub to buy, an ID12V.3, but i dunno what config i should get it in, dual 2 ohm or dual 4 ohm, then an amp to power it too

specs are

Dual 2 ohm

Nominal Impedance (IMP) - 1/4 ohms
DC Resistance (Re) - .98 / 3.8 ohms
Resonant Frequency (Fs) - 20.7hz
Electrical "Q" (Qes) - 0.412
Mechanical "Q" (Qms) - 3.80
Total "Q" (Qts) - 0.371
Equivalent Volume (Vas) - 5.71 cu. ft
One Way Linear (Xmax) - 17.0 mm
Cone Area (Sd) - 545 cm2
Sensitivity (Spl) - 88.6db
RMS Power Handling (Pwr) - 250WRMS
Speaker Displacement - 0.07 cu. ft.

Dual 4 ohm

Nominal Impedance (IMP) - 2/8 ohms
DC Resistance (Re) - 1.8/7.2 ohms
Resonant Frequency (Fs) - 20.9hz
Electrical "Q" (Qes) - 0.397
Mechanical "Q" (Qms) - 4.172
Total "Q" (Qts) - 0.363
Equivalent Volume (Vas) - 5.92 cu. ft
One Way Linear (Xmax) - 17.0 mm
Cone Area (Sd) - 545 cm2
Sensitivity (Spl) - 88.6db
RMS Power Handling (Pwr) - 250WRMS
Speaker Displacement - 0.07 cu. ft.

so im gunna need atleast 250w to power this (would prefer to put 300-350 rms tho) so i dunno what amp to run or how to wire it, could get a 150wrms x2 4ohm amp and get the dual 4 ohm model and run one channel to one voicecoil?? i really dunno

of course money does come into this, i have extended my budget to 900 for the sub and the amp, the ID12v.3 either dal 4 or dual 2 is $349 rrp, so the amp i dont really wanna go over $550 for it, of course this is based on rrp, who pays rrp on there audio stuff? heehhee

plz, somone... help me out or ill just put all my money to coilovers....

If you like their gear, maybe get a dual 4ohm and Alpine monoblock

MRP-M350 ~ $399
V-Power range
350wrmsx1@2ohms(0.1% THD)
or
MRD-M301 ~ $599
V12 Range
350wrmsx1@2ohms(0.03% THD)

Ohhh, coilovers. I say get coilovers instead of sub and amp :P

Anyways, I like the sound of the alpine one. You could wait for the jaycar monoblock to come out, or be a sq freak, and get the 4x100.

Something from JL, like a 500/1 or Phoenix GOld Octane R 5.0.1 would do nicely. If not, you could take mr. marty's advice and get that 3 channel audison.

that 2nd hand coustic amp would do nicely. lol

Forget the voice coils for now... Find an amp to suit it before you buy your sub.

Otherwise you are just limiting ur options.... there is no audible difference between subs with different voice coil configs... The only reason they are different is to enable you to load down your amp appropriately.

Sooo....

Find an amp. You want a monoblock if possible.
If you get a two channel amp you will need a dual 2 ohm VC config (I take it ur just getting one sub)
Depending on how much bass u want any amp between 200 w rms and 600 w rms will drive this nicely. The more RMS the more headroom = the better sound. All other things equal.

When looking for a monoblock the main thing you will be interested in is how much power it produces driving the lowest resistance.

I say look for an monoblock that is stable at 2 ohms. Then buy a dual 4 sub so you run it at 2 ohms in parrallel.

Peace

thankyou tim thats what i was really looking for

haha yeh eek, coiloves would be cool, but would require alot of work ar KFC for them :( plus im sick n tired of my sound system now (Alpine HU and splits with stock rears) its ok, but i need some better, cleaner sounds from the car, plus when ppl get coilovers lowered springs are gunna be all over the forums!, i got dibs on wolfs spirngs!

hmmm just looking at some stuff

if i get the dual 2 ohm ID sub, and then get the jaycar 2x150 amp (2x230@2ohm) that 460rms to the sub, plus its cheap and if i could pick up the ID subs at 270 or so each i could put 2 12's in my boot..... oooo

yeh i know but you go to some shops and the product is $600 they are like "oh there isnt much room on that one" then they go away to "check" figures and come back and say "yeh lowest we can go is $550" lol Thats when you walk out.

Go into any store and say I can get that on ebay for 60% of the price tag. They will bring it down. They have to compete with online stores otherwise they will lose the market.

ive been looking at alpine monoblocks, if i can swindle an MRD-501 to power the sub ill be extremly happy

but it has 1% THD? i thought that was bad

1% THD will be unnoticeable for subs. That's the trade off with monoblocks generally. You would never use a D class amp to run full range speakers. For sub frequencies this will certainly be unnoticeable.

Even 5% thd wouldn't be 'that' bad for subs. RMS power is more important. And damping factor. This is the amps ability to control the movement of the cone, very important when moving a large moving mass like a subwoofer.

Peace
