View Full Version : bose acoustimass system in car
well, anyone tried it? or similar? ie small satellites in small enclosures mounted convieniently somewhere near the footwells/doors pointing up and a sub (bose or otherwise) crammed in the back somewhere.
i'm want to avoid destroying the map pockets in my doors just to get decent sound. i'm thinking this may be the ticket.

You want to get as much midbass as possible from your front speakers. By placing small satellites, you will have no midbass from the fron and half the sound will appear to come from behind you. Will also be a pain in the butt to get non car audio speakers to fit in your car.
I wouldn't recommend it.
(and its 240v ;) )

Pfft, satellite speakers - good for movies, poor for music. They lack a serious amount of low mids (which is where a lot of guitars, synths and percussion sit in a mix). It's like there's this big jump between what the satellites can produce and what the sub is producing.

Acoustimass is just BOSEspeak for "split system" - high level tweeters,
omnidirectional bass box. Tweeters are mix of direct & reflected.
Which is exactly what you'll have if you get dash-mounted tweeters, mids in
the doors & rear parcelshelf and maybe a subenclosure in the boot if necessary.
Not all BOSE Acoustimass are active, the active 240V ones are a recent invention.
The original Acoustimass (bass unit has 1 big port) is a passive unit, drive it with
any standard amp like any other speaker.
BOSE stuff is nice to look at and they don't sound too terrible, but the value-for-$ is bad.
If you're a true audiophile you'll be able to do better value with your $ by getting proper
decent speakers and setting them up right. Even a simple bookshelf pair can sound better.

I was holding out on bagging Bose, but agree with everything said. anyone who knows anything about sound knows Bose is overpriced and over advertised.
They put too much money into designing fancy looking audio but miss the fundamentals.
For the price they are a total rip.
Peace
Tim
i was using the accoustimass as an example as everyone knows what they are. there must be other models by diff manufactures of similar size but i don't know them by name.. i guess they ought to advertise more. :D
so you guys reckon those kinds of systems are fundamentally crap? maybe i am destined to butcher the doors to get decent sound then..

I have nothing against BOSE... they make nice looking stuff.
They sell them to a certain market (usually the same ppl who buy BMW 316s & Merc hatch)
to put them into trendy houses without much work. And for that market, they sell well.
There are some decent BOSE stuff if you know what you're looking for, eg Roommate
speakers. They're little 9" bricks with a solid enclosure, they give great performance
for a little room. Have heard them bolted into a Pajero for rear fill - pretty good!
Haven't seen too many BOSE ads lately, wonder what they're up to these days. :P
