G'day all,

Just a few questions or comparisons....

I just recently bought a 97 TE Magna Advance (3.0ltr V6)

This is my first car, and until a fortnight ago when i bought the magna have driven a majority of Falcons (Inline 6) and Commodores (V6) that either mates own or my parents.

Anyway my quiery comes after doing 70,000km's in my parents AUII falcon in the last 18 months... The falcon at 110km/h revs at around the 2,000rpm which is a nice smooth low cruising engine speed... now the magna does 2,900rpm (spot on 3,000rpm at 120km/h) which is a bit higher than I am used to... does everyone's magna rev at this speed at this speed? By the way my car is a 5-speed Manual (which i thought would make it rev less than anything with the 5th gear??!?!?!?)

I find it wierd, especially since a majority of my driving is at 110-130km/h on outback roads... and I can't help but think it would be wasting a large amount of fuel (even though it is exceptionally good on fuel economy already) by revving so highly?

Just thought I would ask if this is normal operation... and if it is just a disadvantage of the jap-crap syndrome maybe?

Maybe a 6th gear wouldn't go astray?? lol... altho realistically... :(

Thanks fulla's,
Stay safe on the roads,

Regards

YOu aren't the only one I have the same thing. at 110 it is sitting about 3000rpm. I think it is normal tho.

Hmmm...

Personally I've got a 2.6l TR which does about 100 @ 2200rpm (a bit less actually), thats in 5th Gear obviously in a 5 Speed Manual.

Is this normal for a TR or what?

um yeah i get something similar about 3000 above 110-120
it would still be a lot more fuel economic than the ford
i get 10litres/100km driving it pretty hard
i reckon the panel filter has improved my fuel economy tho

Hmmm... I think my tacho was saying 2500 RPM when I was at 100 in fifth tonight. That sounds low cause I can remember thinking gee, it revs a bit when I'm doing 110. Think I'll have another look when I'm driving next.

TE 5 speed.
I dont know if this helps...

My 5-sped TE is on 3k rpm at 125km/h.

The reason they are geared like this is becuase the 3ltr motor simply doesn't have the torque that the 3.8 falcon motor does.
Becuase the motor has so much more torque, you can drive it at much lower rpm and still have enough 'force' to keep it moving.

Even still, my 3ltr is very close fuel economy-wise to my old-mans AUII on the open road, the difference being my right foot.

Also, it'd really hurt us if we tried to tow anything heavy, I'm not sure we could hold 5th gear at 120.

thanks fulla's

cheers

By the way Grecy - the falcon motor's are 4.0 litre - a very nice engine indeed. However chew the juice *a little* more than a magna.

yeah dude thats normal. i actually find my car likes to sit on about 3000 in fifth (120km) and i reckon on the open road they are damn good on fuel, but i've only owned four bangers before the magna.

I had a look at mine today and in 5th it does about 2300rpm at 100km.

And about 1400 at 80.

My 3.5 4sp auto is ~2000 RPM at 100Km/h.

The manuals have totally different gearing to the autos.

i get about 100km's to 12Litres if i treat the accelarator like an egg shell..
is this economic in comparsion to you guys.. how fuel do you all chew?

in my 3.5l auto sports 99 i would get about 9-10l/100k grandma style - and up to 12.5-13l driving normally :)
but i do long drives though its not stop/start traffic...
my tripometer says i average about 12.5 usually

in my TS v6 3l manual i was getting about 11.5.

yup thats about the same here..
im a fuel freak so i drive grandma style everywhere haha guess i should let her rip every now and then eh.. well i did the other day when it was wet that was quite amusing, didnt think a wagon would wheelspin like that! but then again pretty much anything wheelspins in the wet.

yeah mate, this is the standard revs! exactly 3000rpm to 120km/h for a 5sp manual '96+. i have the 3.5L and i always try to find 6th gear! But you start to like it after a while as they manage good fuel economy but are plumb in the torque curve means you have plenty of shove if you want to overtake (i generally drop to 4th just for more fun though  )

The reason of this is that the gear box follows the same ratios (my first gear is a little different to yours) as the original 4 cyl magnas... prolly to save developement/manufacturing costs...
