I'm trying to fix my friends auto gearbox. The car is a '91 magna with the 2.6 astron 2 engine. The gearbox has no drive in 3rd gear, 1st and 2nd work normally but when it changes into 3rd it just revs like crazy. I've been told it's the clutches on 3rd gear, does this sound right?
Also does this car have a seperate ECU for the gearbox, i looked everywhere under the centre consol but couldn't find it.
Also where is the check connector for the gearbox and engine computers so i can check for error codes.
I don't have a repair manual for it so it's hard for me to figure out whats what.
Is this a common problem for early magnas?

If your friends auto has problems like that it's probably just best to replace it with a reco or second hand one with warranty and be done with it.

You betcha.

Bet you dime to a dollar you've also lost Overdrive and Reverse.

1st & 3rd runs their own belt, Pulley shell is gone from 2nd/OD/Reverse.

You're looking at a new/reco gearbox, there's nothing you can do at home except
pull out the old gb and take it to a reconditioners or get a swapover.

Reverse still works properly, don't know about overdrive, can't accelerate through 3rd gear to can't get to 4th.
Do you know where the check connector is located? I want to check for error codes anyway.
How much would a 2nd hand/reco box cost, i can change it myself.

ok, maybe yours ain't as damaged as mine.

Mine blew up earlier this yr, 1-owner TN wagon with 200,057 kms.

Best quotes I got were $500+GST for changeover box, $800+GST fitted with 12m warranty.

Went as high as $1300-1700 from FluidDrive.

Wreckers can sell you an untested box for $300-500... bit risky imho.

If you're going to put in a new gearbox you may as well convert it to manual. There's a thead somewhere on here or the tr/ts forum about a changeover but I couldn't be stuufed looking for it.
