Ok , now a few of use would be saying something like WTF with that kind of subject but here it goes..
Ok smokers induction kit was put in about a month ago now, and have been thoroughly enjoying it. But last night (wa) saw its first REAL heavy storms, and of course, came with it lots of rain. so of course thinking of this made me be real careful where i drive now that the filter is down behind the bar.
But of course 700m down the road, at the bottom of the hill, is THE blocked drain with water all away accross the road, up to the curb. Great....
so mounted the kurb went as slow as possible thith out stopping (just idled accross) thought great im gonna make it...... dead - s***
anyway my car has sat down at the end of my road immobile, while i had to drive my mums magna to work (tj to, but a piece of **** and no fun to drive)
Now got it home with the filter off and let it dry, i am very lucky to not suck up too much water, but the airflow meter had to come out to get rid of the water.
I am now in the process of modufying the setup with pieces of spare acrylic sheets, to (protect) the pod from water, and help deflect water and other ******* away from the filter. should would fine from now on with this, and will keep you posted on this. If anyone has had this happen to them please speak up, like to hear your thoughts
Cheers Gazza
P.S oh yeah the council cleaned the drains about 2hrs later - no more water

Happened to me too. A very wet day and Parramatta Rd, car was stalling and other strange things. Afterwards the MAS sensor died and it developed a strange electrical problem (not sure if related). This was with a RPW kit. Since sold the car, not going to do it to the new one. Panel filter and CAI all they way.

the water wont go up to your TB, i believe the suction is not strong enough to suck that far up.. it stalls because its sucking in water and not air... the ecu gets all funny and it will stall..
thats what i've been told anyways........

I think having your filter and/or MAS down that low is just asking for trouble. Much better to leave the MAS where it is, and either run a panel filter or make up a box to enclose a pod in the same place, and have nothing but piping hanging down low.

Yeh there was no water in the pipes, i think that the flow meter just sensed less air flowing and killed it, the filter was drenched
now i just hope the afs is ok will find out tomorrow, thanks guys for your support :doubt:

doesn't matter if its a TH smoker, rpw or big W kit as soon as the filter goes underwater it will starve the engine of oxygen and stall...
same with the setup i got, panel filter with piping down to the front bar, if the end of that pipe goes underwater same thing will happen i will stall
best thing about the panel design, if i see a flooded area comin up and i have to cross, i can pull the pipe from the airbox and let it use the air from the engine bay :D

with mine, the 2nd last connection with oneof the bends i didnt glue, so when its REALLY p!ssing down, i just take the last little bit of the pipe off which gets the end of the pipe well above ground level.
And i only do that to be extra careful. I forgot one night to take that peice out and had been driving around in real heavy rain for ages. Anyways when i remembered i pulled over and felt the pipe and the part at the front of the bumper was soaked, but i took my panel out and had a good look at that and the inside of the airbox and absolutely no sign of moisture at all

This was my biggest concern... I really wanted to do the kit thing but I have chosen to box the pod instead and run a pipe down... even then I will be watching how the open pipe is situated... and not just for water... I just need to get off my ass and do it...
Ok, so if a pipe set up from an enclosed short pod kit lead down happened to become immersed in water, there is definitely no way it would have enough suction to draw water up there??... seems a bit unlikely...but makes you wonder given an engines natural tendancy to want to keep moving and thus draw air as needed. Hopefully the MAS would react in some way. it might pay to have a small breather hole in the pipe somewhere up the pipe...

when its been absolutely pelting down i can still drive my car and its fine.. and i think the front of my car is lower than many of yours.
i've only ever had 1 problem.. and thats when i drove through a puddle 2 feet deep.. and my car is less than a foot of the ground

A little off the track but have you (or anyone else) had a look at the condition of the pod when it is under the motor? as far as being dirty... I would definately not be one to regularly clean the damn thing... just curious with those who have had theirs on for a while now and how dirty they actually get and how quickly too (frequency of having to clean it and what state is it in).

i have my pod and MAS relocated behind the front bumper...
i've driven it with heavy rain... the first time i it happened, i pulled upto a machanic shop, borrowed their screw driver and checked for water around the TB area... there was no sign of water or moisture but the pod was soaked...
only thing is to avoid big puddles... or you can just fly though it... lol

HyperTF, I clean it every 3-4 months... amazingly it doesnt collect alot of dirt at all....
you do get dirt particles and what not but not what you expect it to be...
When i had the pod in the engine bay area, i had a pipe connected down to the front bumper, after 3 months, not only does the pod get dirty, the whole engine bay gets dirty...
solution? enclose the pod and have the pipe connected and then down behind the bumper.
did you get that???

yeh guys its physically impossible for water to travel vertically up the pipe to the throttle body with such minimal suction........
if you drive through a deep puddle that submerges your filter of pipe the motor will stall every time with not one drop of water reaching anywhere near the TB........how far the water goes up your CAI depends on how deep the puddle is.......

it was pretty high, and yes i am a bit stupid, now looking at how low the front of the car is (pedders lows springs allround), the filter would of just soaked up the water (it was almost up to the top of the kurb) without any troubles
yeh, i,ve now made a few new mods to the arrange ment, with an acrylic plate covering the corner front corner up to the wheel, and up behind the wheel, which should help deflect some water away from the front wheel andpuddles e.t.c
Tried it today in wet conditions (not as bad) and filter was completely dry, and yes i am very lucky and it runs fine
I will try and get some photos of this tonight while im taking the subs out fro the drags tomorrow night (weather permitting)

Ok Heres a few pics, although they arn't the best due to the clear acylic, and silver flashtac and low light, but you should get the idea.
Around the front of the bumper is screwed to the scew holes, and sealed with some stick-on foam tape to form a seal. the acylic is cut to suit the corner of the bumper back to the wheel guard. a small acylic flap was added at the back to help reduce the amount of crap spun off the wheel. this was secured with flashtac on both sides. same on the inside (towards engine) very small flap placed and secured with flashtac to help again
This costed me nothing at all apart from 2 hours (I made this by parts i already had sitting in the shed). All you need is some acrylic, a figsaw, flashtac (or something else for that matter) and a spare couple of hours

well for stater's your pod is sitting a sh1t load lower than what mine was( you could'nt see my pod looking level with the bottom of the front bar)
Did you cut the plastic side bit out or remove it totaly? if you dont do either the pod will sit lower because the maf hits it (plastic side cover thingy)
well atleast your car is alright and thats the main thing..............and btw what do you think of the perfomance with the cai?

LMFAO......what the hell did you expect to happen when you submerge the pod in water
seriosly think about this guys.
firstly there is almost NO HOPE getting water to the throttle body unless you submerge your entire car in water while revving the thing to about 02398756902367589023765892087 thousand rpm.
there is no problem driving with the setup in the rain and i have seen this kit on a th lowered and it was pissing rain and the pod was slightly wet...
at worst, all that can happen is if you totally submerge the pod in water, your maf will give a false reading to the ecu causing the car to imediatly stall.
and with the pod getting dirty....come on were you born brain dead or are you naturally like that.....OF COURSE THE POD WILL GET DIRTY....ffs the pods get dirty under the bonnet and why the hell does the factory service book tell you to replace the standed item pannel filter??? BECAUSE IT ALSO GETS DIRTY A RENDERS THE FILTER USELESS..
it doesnt take a mathermatition, or fusion scientist to work out that there is sweet @#$% all you can do to keep them clean and last forever...unless of course you run a pod and a panell filter...then you would have to be a daft wanker..
in reality, the smart thing to do would be to use a cheap pod and simply replace it every 2 months or what ever tickles you minds..12 dollars every 2 months...WHOOP DIDOO...
me and thsmoker made a very similar CAI on a super charged vx calais and the differance was unbelievable...these kits realy work well..for example on thsmokers car, it was a stinking hot day and we went for a drive to kill some time and when we got back to my place we felt the intake manifold above the runners and it was far from hot...we could acually leave our hands on it and not burn our selvs....before that day we were working on the throttle body to tweak it up a bit and i kept leaning on the intake manifold like an idiot and kept burning my self...
on a final note i say this....to all the owners of thsmokers kit and rpw ect, go for a good hard drive and then place your hand just after the throttlebody and see if it burns you.
now to the people that dont have a cold air intake kit and only have a crappy k&n pannel filter, go and take it for a good hard drive, go home and feel behind the throttle body..
the evidence IS there that these kits work and WORK WELL

I no, it blocks off some of the intake where it can pickup air from, but i can live with that, and I will take it off after winter, and when nessesory (eg drags) as its only secured by 2 10mm bolts - like its that hard to take off
Now I love love Smokers Induction kit notherless and still recomend it dew to its performances gains and awsome "smooth" barrel sound of pipes sucking air combined with the high flow throttle.
Most of us understand that we would have to clean the pod more often - your crazy if you think that it would extend its service life.
I DO and DID NOT blame TH Smoker for this incident, as I was the idiot who decided to drive thorugh a stream of water which I knew was extremely risky to start off.
The purpose of this thread was to find out if anyone has had this problem before with the kit, and to make people aware of the problems that I had, and make sure that anyone would not have this problem in the future (hopefully)

OK, that's somewhat better... I just think you were way out of line before... I know you may not give two hoots for what I think, but that sort of outburst sort of doesn't help with forums either... people get along relatively well here and we don't often see posts like your first one.
I do hear what you are saying but just chill a bit... these forums work well... you can get the point across without stomping on people in the process... yeah we have some real dodgy threads and posts, but that's part and parcel...
We are all learning at our own speed and people with more experience often have more tolerance for those who don't...
