View Full Version : Tyres for Tj
I have a great 2001 TJ with RE 92s. I felt that they were just Ok. However Wheels did a recent test of basic 205/65s and the 92s performed very well against the opposition :!: What do people think :?:
If I went up to 215s will this effect the heaviness of the Power Steering? The TJ has very light steering which is brilliant for my wife who has a very weak back. Some would say too light. However for my wife in sydney traffic it has been the best thing about the car :p
If they will not affect steering weight has anyone suggestions on 215s
ps. You should hear the complaints by owners of new comodores about the heavy power steering at parking speeds.

I thought the RE92's were alright for the first 5000 km's. Then they went downhill. Probably had something to do with the poor wheel alignment they did when they fitted them. I don't think they are very good in the wet now and I've had them for maybe 25,000. I needed to get something cheap at the time as my current tyres would aquaplane at 90. I saw that comparo too and thought I'm glad I didn't buy something cheaper.
i was reading motor i think it was may have been wheels but anyway bridgstone came out all round winner in the sports tyre in all conditions winning in most sections. dont get perelli's[sp] they were bottom for most tests.
dunlop also came out well never on the bottom.

Yeah, and it proved that you get what you pay for if you get retreads - evil!

well my 2002 tj came with re 92's and my dad has re 92's on the font of his kr at the moment. For the tj i found they are hard to judge as they tyre was too thin for the power (7" is needed for the stock models and 8" for the vrx) and also i only used them for around 500k's before i went and got new rims.
for the tr though i found they are really good... much improved traction over what the old rubber was (think they were olympus tyres?) putting 215's shouldnt make a difference to your steering.. if anything the difference will be un noticeable

Anyone here uses Yokohama A539s???
They've got thread patterns that I won't say it as Sleek and Agressive.. but the threads are kinda blunt and nice...

damn both of my tyres respond very very very well to the groulesome workout they get
ben.

All i can tell U about tyres is : I have original 16" (215x60x16) .Originally Mitsu fited with Bridgestone Turanza ER30(Shit !!), after 25,000 front tyres become "Bold" ,so i changed to Japanese made 'Sumito Srixong 4'. Lot better with more grip on wet & better control in any condition, About Yokohama -I had twice but on my wife mazda 626, Yokahama's are good ,but at 20,000- you must start looking for new set:(, Dunlop never!! in Victoria too cold for them :)) unless u willing to try " driving on the ICE" Dunlop's are too spippery.

RE 92 suck big time! They are so hard that there is no bloody traction on them. They are second worst after Bob's Allrounders....
Depends on how much money you wanna spend.
Around 200 bux (per tyre) you can get decent tyres, size 235/45/17. Falkens sportier model, for ecample. But stay away from Dunlop LeMans A4 - if they make them any more, same crap as RE 92s.
Michelin Pilots are also quite good, price just above 200. Std tyre in new Opels and other German cars.
300 bux and you're are getting very good tyres, but do you wanna spend that much.
The width? The wider the more it also pulls on grooves on the road.
Heavy? Wouldn't say so with Magna servos.
Hope this helps.

Correction..
VR-X is 17x7.. not x8 :) for stock rims.

I have 17 * 8" ROH in mine. NRMA apparently doesn't like anything above 7"
They're nice with 235/45's.... Beats any fregging Dunnydoor with their moronic stock RE 92's when gunning the corners. HAH! 8)
Go bigger, man!
