Gday Peeps I hope the club are all well Ive being looking at changing my own oil and have a couple of specific questions.I am taking the majority choice and changing every 5000km My tj has done 182,000 the oil was last changed 7500 but the stuff in it looks good maybe 25_40% darker than new, feels silky and light to the touch ,no grit.I don't know though if it has at the moment(is there anyway to tell)?or has ever had synthetic in it. this Is what I am going with. Will it be a problem if it has alway run on mineral?will I need to flush first ?should i really go with the french stuff at $60 motul 4100 :doubt: ?or something cheaper? thanks boys and girls

well if your running with minerals at the moment, then you can change to semi-syn or fully syn,no problems there... but the other way round is arguable... some say flush, others just **** it... should be alright...

hmm... that didnt really help at all did it...

Oil on your dipstick will never have "grit"... if it does, you've got a SERIOUS prob!!

If the oil is any darker than new, its already picked up black contaminants
suspended in the liquid. The bigger bits would have come out in the filter.

If you leave the blacker oil sitting in a tall container for a few weeks,
it'll start settling out to the bottom & you can see it.

If you're gunna change it often, no big harm going cheaper.

Mineral oil works well if you're not an 'extreme' driver.

Flush?
Some chuck in a bottle of Wynns Flush... others say don't bother.
Other crazy idiots (hehe) even fill up the sump with clean new oil, crank it
a few turns then drain the new oil out... and fill it again with fresh oil.

$60 for Motul 4100?!?!?!? what the hell? Sorry, we sell them for $40 here in Adelaide. :(

Motul is by far the best oil for the money. just do a search for motul and you will see why. We now sell them to a guy who is a lab technician at an oil refinery lab!!! enough said.
