There is a **** load of oil coming out of my car, took it in to get looked at and have been told my rear main seal is gone.....
what i would like to know is if this has happened to anyone else, what it cost to fix and how many kay's were on the car....
1996 TE 3.0ltr auto 180,000k's car is always serviced and looked after never thrashed...
have been quoted at $900.00...
Rear seal, both rocker gaskets, oil & filter, and general service and Labor....

I haven't had this done, but was told at my last service, that this is starting to happen to my car, and it will cost around $900 as well. Apparently, it's just very minor atm and I know I'm not losing any oil right now, but that's what I was told.
Where's the oil going on your motor? Out the exhaust?
maybe its only happing to me oh well..............
nah mate it happened to my parents TE V6 exact problem but no were near as bad it dosent even drip but the service people say that there is a leak there

...dude on this car most oil leaks are from the rocker covers and it cascades down to the bottom of the engine making detection difficult...just replace the rocker cover seal/gasket yourself its easy...
the seal/gasket costs about $6 and if its the rear you have to remove the plenum chamber (again easy)...change the rear spark plugs and check the distributor cap, rotor and spark plug leads @ the same time...
just make sure you have @ least a $15 ratchet set and a torque wrench (cylinder head is aluminum [super soft] and the bolts can be easily over tightened).
anyone who pays $900 to do this along with an oil change is on crack
if u dont know how to do this buy a Gregory's service manual, should take about 2-3hrs max for a first time amateur...
if you cant do the above then dont pay more than $150 max for 2hrs labour...shop around and know what your talkin about (buy a Gregorys manual) so they dont to try to rip u off..
**PS** this topic has been discussed b4 try using the search button. Look for "rocker cover gasket" or "oil leak rear" etc...
If it really turns out that u have an oil leak between the motor and the gearbox then disregard above info...
Cheers!!!

do you have to remove the engine from the car or can just the gearbox be removed to get at the rear main seal in a V6 magna?

I would have thought it was an engine out job, but now that I think about it - Judging by the pics posted by Asylum of his transmission replacement, pretty sure he didn't have to take the engine out to remove the gearbox.
Either way - it'll be a fu(king big job, like a whole weekend and then some after work to get it finished. If it were me I'd probably leave it to the professionals.
Do you reckon it would be safe to leave for another 20,000K's topping up the oil regularly?? Cause they'll have to take the engine out for your 200,000K service anyway. It would be pretty suckful to have to pay for two engine out jobs inside 12 months.

1st why does the engine have to come out at 200,000k?
2nd if i just topped it up with oil i wouldn't be going on any other cruzies until its fixed...
3rd the gearbox weighs to much to pull it out on it's own as the mechanic is going to drop it out on the floor then hoist the car up out of the way....
4th I'm sick of working on cars I do it all day and then to come home and do it **** it pay someone else this time....
