Ok I have a Sticky Situation that not many of you have had So here Goes....
Which Sub Setup Should I go for ??
Options:
1. a 12 inch Ported Sub of Not very good Quality firing through the Ski Port
2. A High Quality 10 inch in a Huge Sealed Enclosure
3. Turn the 12 incher Around to face the Back of the Car and get Bigger Bass and Bigger Boot Rattles
4. Turn the 10 incher Around to get Better Quality Bass which leads to Worse Boot Rattles
I have not got the time at the moment for Deadoning Everything as the only thing that rattles now is the Boot opening Mechanism..
What I am Ideally after is Bass to Blend in with the 6x9's so it can be Felt more then Heard but at the same time not sound like someone Bashing the side of a Cardboard Box..

will sound deadening stop the rattles? Bit off topic I know, but Im looking at getting a sub soonish and am worried about the boot rattling. How do you get the mechanism to stop rattling?
Go a high quality 10 or 12" in a sealed box. Im not a fan of doof doof, just nice clean sharp bass. I want quality music, not a headache! :D

For the most accurate bass, go for free air sub - means you get to keep all of your boot too... Accurate as in a flat response curve. More than enough bass to shake the rear mirror (measured 130db A weighted)
I ended up fitting a 12" kicker freeair, as I have to carry a lot of audio gear (to give you an idea, I fill the entire boot, back seats, back footwells, front passenger seat and front passenger footwell) as I regularly do outside broadcasts.
Listening to broadcast/studio quality audio gives you an appreciation of how much a box can change the response of a speaker.

For the best bass response in terms of quality, an Aperiodic membrane (mounted over the front of the sub will give the best results and save boot space. The membrane fools the sub so the sub sees a much larger enclosure. It gives the same characteristics and damping. But not all subs suit this. Some subs suit ported.
But that's out of reach for most in terms of testing and construction.
So the easiest way to get rid of boot rattles if you dont want to deaden, is to build a mini wall.
This is just a partitition in your boot. It seals the boot off stopping reflections and enables you to fire through the ski port effectively. Or rear load if you really want to.

Get 2 10"'s in a box and face the speakers towards the back seat, that way you get sexy sound and nice massage.

I went for the 12 inch Ported and Fired it Through the Ski Port..
Now here is my Current Problem...
I fade in the 6x9's and I get a HUGE boost in Mid bass that over Powers the Sub-Bass.
I am going to use the Lowest possible Pass on the sub I can get... That is Low off the Deck on Low off the Amp and see if that doesn't cure it..
Its weird it is if the sub is Boosting the Mid- Bass Capabilty of the 6x9's

I would suggest rear loading if using 10's. Utilise the big boot. You won't get tooo many rattles from a single 10.
I'd just buy some deadener though. ~$50 worth and no rattles at all...

I will if I want to Achieve the Bass Level I desire....
I want Maximum Boom, you know gut shaking R&B Bass that is needed for J-wess or Nelly's Country Grammer to really be effective...

Maximum boom... Biggest ported 12" or 15" you can fit in... And Big ports too... Rear load and deaden boot.

GOLDARNDAGNAMMIT!
I asked about this stuff - couldn't remember the name (I called it anerobic or anechoic) - everybody called me nuts...
Can you still buy it?

lol I remember the thread now... I was thinking about using this option so did a bit of research
You can buy the actual aperiodic membranes from specialists for a lotta $$$.
easier way is to use two sheets of metal grille (something with small holes) Then sandwich sheets of insulating material(straight out of your roof ;)) in b/w and clamp/screw the sheets together.
Easiest way is to cover the face of the driver but u have to separate the woofer front/back from the cabin (using a mini wall/sealed parcel shelf etc) Or separate it from the car and have it vent to outside (v dificult with rain etc)
Other option is to create a small enclosure out of fg. (so small that ONLY the sub fits in) then place the membrane behind that.
It suits some subs... Doesnt suit others and you will give up a bit of low end extension. But the bass notes themselves will be dramatically improved
You may need access to an RTA to test how thick the insulating material should be.
For ppl that dont know what im talking about. Cover your mouth with a jumper and breathe in and out... This is the type of resistance that emulates the box damping for a sub in an aperiodic design.

WellI got it all sorted now and It sounds Sweet as...
I Went with the 12 inch Ported, looked up Port Tuning on CAA and did the Necessary work and Tuned the Box to the Woofer's Recommended Tuning Frequency of 36hz..
A whole lotta maths and A 4 inch Post Pak Round Card Board Tube later the Port is Tuned and Sounds as sweet as..
I turned the sub around so it is firing into the Boot with the Magnet side facing the Cabiin, Gave it a bit more gain on the amp and it now Blends in with the 6x9's Beautifully..
OK so my Boot now rattles like Anything but you cannot hear it on the inside...
Now My system has its High's Mids and Lows Sorted I can now listen to R&B, Dance and Trance as loud as I want... ( I am not one of those guys who thump the Crap out of my system through the main street and I have it low enough to hear Emergency Sirens)
Very Happy Boy..
Now for the Cosmetic Side of things.....
Maximum boom... Biggest ported 12" or 15" you can fit in... And Big ports too... Rear load and deaden boot.
yes there is such thing as too much boom :doubt:

Too much Boom is when you here some ones Subs sounding like somebody beating the Crap out of an Empty cardboard box... I like quality to my Boom so it sounds smooth and rolling, not Peaky and Cardboard like....

yeah, as some ppl have heard, my boom is rather laggy lol
DD 2515, around 1000wrms of PG power, 2.4cu ft box and tuned to about 40Hz or something....i've fiddled around with it a little now, it gets rather loud and very low :D....still, its too boomy for my liking :doubt:
