Hi guys. I just bought a 97 Verada and am new to this fantastic site.
Does anyone know of a proven way(s) to improve fuel economy?
I've just done a tank in 350 (city) kilometers.....
there are a number of ways,
extractors, exhuast, ect ect
premium fuel gets a little better also,
less foot on the accel always helps too hehe

Speak To EZ Boy about a ported and polished Throttle Body...
Check out the Thread in the Magna Mods Forum, nice cheap mod. I've had one installed and noticed a better fuel economy.

surprisingly enough, a lot of "modifications" can actually improve proformance, as well as fuel economy
my turbo has dont just that hahaha.. as low as 9.1/100 @ 140km/hour

keep ya tyres inflated to an optimum pressure to maximise economy, and drive with the lightest load in your car possible... subs and extra ppl will increase the load on ur engine hence using more fuel
I've just done a tank in 350 (city) kilometers.....
There is something wrong with either A) your right foot or B) your engine.

Damn! That's pretty ordinary for the 70L fuel tank
You sure that was a full tank?

y not try cleaning ur injectors first and see how u go from there coz maybe it was ancient time since the last time it was cleaned

CAI and clean your air filter. Exhaust, TB, headers when you've got the budget. If it helps it to breathe or lightens the load (worked heads) efficiency improve, fuel economy improves and performance - yeah ok it improves too.

if you're doing most of those km's in stop-go traffic then it's perfectly normal. the magna is a big guzzler like all big heavy cc sedans when it comes to stop-go traffic. but when it comes to cruising on the highway, fuel economy goes up by leaps and bounds.
some things you can do to better fuel economy (though i doubt by much in your case) has already been mentioned by the other fellas. i find the best way to improve economy is always to change your driving habits. look ahead and anticipate conditions, induce upshifts more often by lifting gradually off the accelerator and purr the revs instead of stomping on the accelerator.

my te auto 3.0 litre with pod no cai and muffler i still get around 570 km around town and that me drving it i have size 15 boot say no more :D

Sorry dood, but there is no way in hell that using 70 litres in 350km's in normal.
People are telling this poor bloke to use a CAI or get injectors cleaned etc, which is totally on the wrong track.
Like i said before, there is either a serious problem with the engine (ie it's running WAY rich) or this guy is thrashing the sheizer out of it.

OK, so what sort of economy should you get from a 3.5L. I have a TL AWD and would be interested to know because this is the sort of economy I am getting as well. Should I take the car (it is only 3 months old) to the dealer and say this needs to be investigated?

I've got a 97 verada and 400km's in city driving is about average for me when the light comes on, and the needles just above E. But when i fill up theres normally about 10 - 15 litres left in the tank.
But I've got a heavy Right foot aswell.
I can normally get about 550km's from a tank in normal driving

What does the average fuel consumption say on the dash?

This is about right with mostly city and a little bit of 'highway' driving.

yeh but 20L/100kms! that is NOT normal.
All city driving my TE manual would use around 12L/100kms

It is currently saying 12l /100km but I will go through the log book when I get home and do some calculations as it really does not seem like that is the case. Oh well, maybe I need to look seriously at the TB grind and polish, exhaust and maybe extractors. Don't know about CAI though.
12L/100km is average if you have a fairly heavy right foot.
Trying really hard - i got 9.9l/100km averaged over about a 450km.
If i drive mostly normal but give it a bit now and then, i average about 10.5/100km.

go and look for something called a hiclone they are ment for 4wd but the dude i talked to said they work wonders on any car getting 2 of those will bring your km from about 600 to about 900 well thats wat he recons any way so hiclones are the way to go www.hiclone.com.au

Actually some have actually tested that hiclone and it does absolutely nothing
Someone put it in their Mazda mx-5 and all it did was restrict air in the low rpm range and then it just sounded nicer in the high rpm.
Someone else tested it in their magna and had no difference.
This is another of the debates wether it actually works or not.

Big thanks to everyone for their comments!
It seems that some people believe my fuel consumption is reasonable while others think it is a too thirsty?
It sounds like my car needs to be looked at? It runs beautifully and has 112,000 kms on it. Smooth as a babies bum. But jeez, coming from motorbikes, paying for fuel sucks.
A flowed throttle body sounds nice!
I may have been a bit heavy on the throttle, but definately not flogging it. Needless to say I'm practicing being very gentle on the throttle now!

I'm currently getting about 13-14L/100km out of my TJ Sports AWD which is not much better than the EF Falcon it replaced. That currently equals about 350km per tank for me. My missus is the one who uses it all the time, in stop start traffic and she's no leadfoot so I would be expecting a bit better economy than that. I've been thinking that it might be the lack of low down torque in the 3.5L that might be causing all my fuel economy woes.
Regardless, TJ is in for a service on Friday so I'll make sure they change the air filter and see if that might make a difference (time to start eliminating possible causes one by one  )

I have TJ Exec. 2002 auto and 95% of my driving is in start-stop traffic (going to work and coming from work during rush hour). My fuel consumption is around 14.2L.

My TH is on LPG and when I first bought it about a year and a half ago i was getting 420km to a tank (62lt). However now i'm only getting 350km. Maybe a tune is in order?

I installed a Redback full system and a nice cold air induction where the cold air is getting drawn from the front grill, at about 6 deg c, it has been cold in Tassie, and i managed to get 7.8 average on the Highway and 10.8 in town. Did 720 Km to a tank on Premo, that cost 60 dollars, already had some in it i think.

I get 700 to 750 per tank of ulp and my car only gets serviced once a year. And its a auto four on the floor.
Just have to have light toots on the gas and gentle braking. Try and keep a constant cruising speed. Run red lights instead of slamming on the brakes. Stuff like that.... :D

That sounds about right my missus uses the AWD gets around 13-14L as well.
Hiclone - aparently I've been told this device would stuff up the Magnas air flow meter as it can't handle swirling air.

Yup. I'm up to 4400Km on the car and checking the logs confirms that I'm at 13.0 l/100km. This is on a stock TL 2004 AWD. Time for some changes me thinks!!... Tim

My boss had a 3.5 Litre car. However the computer was set for 3.0 litre. Once it was set correctly it ran well.

Remove your back seat and passenger seat (put a bar fridge there lol), leave the spare tyre at home, polycarbonate windows, carbon fibre bonnet and boot etc etc etc....

This is average for city/suburb work. Remember the car usually starts in 2nd gear on take offs and is 160kg heavier than the stock fwd.
