View Full Version : What are CV joints?
Another question,
What are CV's or CV joints? what are they and what do they do?
As in my last post "rpm@ 100km/h" i mentioned i've really only driven RWD vehicles and have never heard of CV joints really.
Reason I ask is because I was told by a few people to be careful driving on dirt roads in magna's or rather that they are'nt good for driving on dirt as because they are front wheel drive the CV joints wear out quicker and so forth.
Is there any truth to the problem of driving on dirt (which unfortunately is a regular part of my day-to-day driving when i'm at home) and why is this? and again what part does teh CV joints play in this?
thanks all

experience tells me you shouldn't floor your stock magna on a dirt road or wet road while cornering. change the springs and get bigger tires first.
no expert but cv joints are what connect the driving axle to the wheels, which means they need to move left or right while still being able to apply force to turn the wheels.
there is an inner and and outer and mostly the outer wears the most but if you leave the outer warn then it destroys the inner as well. think of it as a big nuckle.
anyway in my experience of rd driving with the tr magna we have only had to replace these twice once at around 200 000kms and second just recently at around 315 000kms. they dont cost too much for the tr unless you get geniune and they replace the complete drive shaft.
complete genuine parts inc drive shaft inc fitting $600
inner and outer inc fitting for one side was about 200 bucks at a specialised cv joint place in adeiade.
It ''shouldnt" be a problem if you replace a side the instant you hear a clicking noise while accelerating and turning. if you let it go it will do more damage and you risk damaging it to the point where you need to replace the lot at 600 for both sides.

For the record, CV stands for Constant Velocity.

CV's are a joint that evolved from the Universal Joint, they were developed specifically for FWD cars so they did the same job as a Uni Joint, but could handle more power going through them.
But they have their downsides as you can hear *clunk clunk clunk* lol
OK ive had CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK only turning left for like 3 months now and once in a while i thrash my car (u know i have to...)
Umm when should i replace them........
Ummmmm im paniking cause i dont have money!!!

You should ideally replace both CV joints.
Costly exercise but replacing one can lead to increased stress on the other and then eventually it will go too.
BUT, I would just get your mechanic to check out both of them before you buy anything, sometimes you can be lucky and the other CV is in good enough condition to not be replaced.

yep time to go , dont stress them out find a cheap place, CV specialists are better than kmart etc. shouldnt take more an 1hour you need to have it done. tell them you havnt got the cash atm to do both, you 'think its ther right' so they test drive it. then get at least the damaged one replaced.

The outer Joint is a CV joint the inner is a DOJ as it moves over a double axis (ie in and out as well as through an angle)
If you keep your boots in good condition you should get many miles out of them. You can get a New outer joint, shaft and reco inner for about $125.00 to $130.00
