Anyone up for headers/extractors to suit their 4cyl 2nd Gens?
Trying to gauge the job so if you've already got headers, mind telling us all what they cost, how much it cost to fit them, what you like/dislike, manufacturing faults, work space access and clearances and anything else relevant.
Thanks folks.
I'm buying a Muffler shop soon and would like to MAKE headers for the AMC members.

You should look at headers for the 6 cyl too.

I'm looking at both 6G72 variants and the 6G74 too. I just noticed that the 4cyclinder people seem to get overlooked a lot and the 4pipe headers seem straight forward to make and install from the cars I've looked at.

I know what you mean :) There's a few brands of extractors out there for the 4cyl...I thought pacies existed for them but Im not sure. But Hurricanes do

i dunno what you guys are on about i got hi-tech extractors for my 4 cylinder for $270 installed. but i spose i got 15% off so they would have been a bit more expensive normally but exhaust place had sale. They arent brilliant as they robbed me of any power/torque below 2500rpm but above that they do pretty good. Other problem with them is they killed my fuel economy, i went from 11L/100kms to just under 13L/100kms. Brands available when i was looking around were hi-tech, wildcat and lukey. All made from mild steel but hi-tech's came with heat proof coating of some sort. A better design for extractors on the 4 would have longer individual pipes for the 4 cylinders to help with the low down and prehaps a better location for the O2 sensor as i have a hunch that its location on mine is half the reason my fuel economy is poor. Better location would be closer to cat so gets the whole exhaust gas flow rather than the partial flow as in mine. Pic sorta explains it. I would be interested in upgrading sometime in the future if there was a better option. As for space in the 4cylinder, well there really isnt a worry as there is heaps of space in the front of the engine bay and plenty of clearence below to the road. only problem is then without heat sheild the heat from extractors might go straight onto the radiator which was one of the reasons why i ended up deciding on the hi-techs. hope some of this is useful.

BEAUTIFUL!! This is exactly the info I'm looking for! Sorry about your experience, the O2 sensor location will definately cause hassles with ECU closed loop running. Need to get the O2 sensor thread details...

No dramas at all - improved effiency (hence free power and imporved fuel economy) for all internal combustion engines.

Carby and EFI are slightly different, something to do with O2 sensor i believe. Also like to hear some prices figures :). Low down torque would definately be a plus.

yeh i was gonna say might be different slightly as carby doesnt have O2 sensor at all do they? but that only means efi extractors have a hole in them somewhere i spose.

The hole can be plugged or not drilled until the end. Most companies just plug the hole and have the option of supplying to fit either vehicle without carrying twice the volume of stock. I like that ;)

I WANT SOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My mate has a scorpion that he put extractors on and they were about $150-$250 I think that they should fit on the 4cyls but I'm not sure if they have a hole for the oxygen sensor. I'm pretty sure that they were Lukey ones.

Oh Yeah I forgot about that. All I remembered was that it used an Astron2 in it I think.
My bad. But I wouldn't have thought that they would cost much more than that for the 4cyl magnas. There's a lot more of them for a start. I was definately thinking a fair bit less than the $400 or so that some people have been quoting.

Maybe make up some that are designed for a twin turbo setup.
I won't need a V6 then only a manual gearbox and I'd give a few people a good run for their money.

if u were looking into extractors, for everyone, would u b interested in making up some turbo manifolds. i know that ill b in the market for one by the end of this year for certain. and if ppl could get their hands on some turbo manifolds for cheaper than anywhere else, we may have some more turbo 1st gens.

nice... u wouldnt have an approximate time would ya? i can understand you must be busy setting up the business and designing extractors etc for everyone else. plenty of time
i would have to get the bolt pattern from the turbo to u aswell. but atm it looks as though im going to use a TD04.

i fooled around with exhausts on my old valiant sedan ( speedway )
i ended up getting a custom exhaust system built to a set of drawings from 1948 car sounded mean at idle but once the pedal was pressed the power came on big time
just like a turbo big system but wow did it give some power advantage
system was used on spitfire aircraft ( injection / induction exhaust ) design that to fit under a magna or simular and get it patented / copywrited and you will make a mint
on the hemi it gave me a 35% usable increse with no decernable load on the engine
i am happy to discuss the matter at length with those that know what is what and can do something with it
i had the 6 mufflers mounted in the back seat with 2 outlets through rear door skin but it could have been designed to fit under the car also

im getting a set a pacemaker extractors tommorow for my first gen, he had a quick look on monday and the guy said $300 but he stuffed up and said they were $390 today. But he'll let me have em for $325 including install. pretty sure there is a set to suit the RWD sigma's and scorpians too.

i have rpw extractors on my v6, they are pretty gay look like they should flow different/better (are much longer, spose low down is better) but no real change in power....i still have stock pipe to cat though, don't know if this would affect it. I'm only first year now and haven't got into flow dynamics

yeah im pretty sure extractors are more effective if you have a free flowing exhaust and muffler.

yeah i'm doing infomechatronics, i still don't know what to expect from it yet but i am working with the fsae dudes and we have discussed flow dynamics it was interesting but i know learning it will be boring....
i just read the original post ez boy and my extractors;
good, look better, good ground clearance, i can say i've got extractors.
bad; don't flow as good as they should, no real change in performance, had problems bolting to the exhaust outlet thingys and leaked....and did i mention no real change in performance....should be able to make use of them with a piggyback

i don't know any online sources but there was two programs (don't remember names) i got recommended and i can get them and some info for you if you want, i haven't studied either of them yet but they sound like the business.
The example the the 4th year dude was working with was the intake pipe for our race car. He'd digitally designed it in this program and tested out some of the current designs properties artificially. Now they have decided to extend the intake pipe with a bit of other differences and actually use a smaller throttle body..he actually has a online forum too...ill find out.

Yeh we have to start designing a type of model car from scratch but not using an internal combustion engine which is too hard to design then build from scratch. Im tossing up between a nitrous/acetylene powered rocket or a fuel cell. Go to scotland to race them and such later so should be interesting.
