It's possible to fix by respraying that way, if you have someone who's good at matching colours. Probably cost $400-800 depending on how bad your paint is (pics?) and quality of work.
Since you're getting those spots though, your paint is in really bad shape and it's definitely a better idea in the long term to to do a full respray.

yeah spray seems a bit to costly, the patches are bad on the roof like 1 tennis ball and 1 basketball, minor on the bonnet and boot, boot and bonnet could be cut n polished n buffed i imagine

so people do patch ups?

Yeah, you can do a patch up, but chances are other faded areas are going to show up anyway. If you're gonna respray (like I did), do the top three. (Boot, Roof and Bonnet); or just the ones showing signs of fading. I did the top three as the're the areas which are most hit by the sun, and hence, subject to fading (my car has never been garaged, so you could imagine what it was like, all these matt areas, was pathetic).

But yeah, didnt do the doors, the're as new. Ended up costing me 600 bucks. Monarch Blue.

Oh, and colour matching is real easy for them. They take off ur fuel cap cover and use that to make the colour.

Hey Ive got these spots as well on mine and I was told that it has something to do with the crapy paint that mitsubishi used on the TR model in partciular.I hear people asking why it hasnt happened to theirs I cant honestly tell you this is just what I was told..But Im getting mine a respray and later a full car spray...I dont if this has helped but good luck with it.

Yeah i've got the same problem. I've been told that it's the clear coat. I'm planning on doing a cut and polish in the next few days so i'll tell you what results I get.

Honestly, I wouldn't expect much.
If anything, you might make it worse as a "cut and polish" will probably just kill even more clear coat although it might not look like it at first.
You would probably be better off with a pure polish and wax to prevent it from getting worse.

I thought that the cut and polish might take off the loose clear coat, but maybe you're right. I think i'll still try it though cos it looks fugly and even if it makes it a bit worse it'll still look fugly. I might put a wax on after though and see what that does to it :D

The clear coat used on the metallic colours will begin to break down and start flaking off with exposure to the sun. It also has this brilliant habit of yellowing.

If the paint underneath is still okay you can cut and polish it to get rid of the loose, flaky clear coat, LIGHTLY scuff it with 2000 grit wet and dry and then just respray with some clear. I did this with mine and got a pretty good result with no need for paint matching but, still a little bit of a white halo where I didn't get all the crappy clear off.

Thanks mate that's really useful. How much was the clear coat and can you get it from places like Repco and Autobarn in tins like the touch-up ones?

Not sure if you can get it in small cans to use in your own spray equipment but, they do sell it in aerosol cans for around $12 - $13 each.
