View Full Version : What a night

What a night. Where to begin, I filled up my car at BP in Pakenham, and it ran fine for about 20mins. I don't know if it was dodgy fuel or what but some very weird things happened.

I was approaching my exit from the Monash freeway, and the engine light came on so i slowed down and the next thing i know the engine basically started to die. Once i stopped the car stalled and tried to start it again and it would start and then stall after a few seconds with the engine's rpm going spaco.

With my foot on the accelerator the revs would be around 3000, then it would instantly drop to 1500 for a second and then back... I was clueless and I couldn’t get the car to move without stalling.

I rang up roadside assistance and had to get my car towed off the freeway because they won’t work on my car there. While waiting for the tow truck (about 1 hr) i tried the car again and it wouldn’t crank, as if it was no fuel or something. After the truck dropped my car off at the nearest servo on Wellington Road, i tried the car again and it started with the tappets being rather loud so I turned it off...

So once the assistance arrived (2hrs) he let it idle for about 10mins and the tappets became quieter and it seemed fine. He told me it could be the oil pressure or something, dodgy oil filter/pump, not sure. It shouldn't be the filter, only just had a service a few weeks ago.

It was very weird and annoying. I seem to think the fuel had bubbles in it or something, if that’s possible lol. o well, cost me $130 to join RSVC or whatever it is for nothing

What a bugger hey... cars... gotta love em... cos otherwise you would smash em to bits lol

So does this mean I might see your car on my way to work in the morning? lol

Hope you get to the bottom of it soon... let us know what it was

yeh my car did that, it turns out it was the computer or the chip somin like that got a 2nd hand 1 of then thrown in andthe old girl worked fine.

The car was fine after it came off the truck, i drove home after the RSCV guy checked it out. It seemed normal, annoying tho i can tell you that. I thought it might have something to do with the ECU because i could hear electric switches going on and off, sounded like it was from the glovebox, this was when the engine was going spaco.

Was it the RACV? anyway, im glad you got it home then. I put it down to these guys. they're a pain in the ass, they get in there and stuff everything lol ;)

That was a rather generalised statement :doubt: .
I stand by that these cars, like ANY other cars, when looked after are very reliable. Mines nearly hit the big 300k kms and i've had her for 2 year and not had 1 single major problem, a couple of minor little things that you'd get with any car.

Anyway, sounds like it could be a few things. The wierd rpm idle thing coulda been TPS, the stalling could have something to do with the air intake/fuel. Though it does sound alot like a dodgy ecu...let us know if you have any more problems.

BP guarantee their fuel quality - if you think its the fuel either go back to the station (probably useless) or ring BP corporate and at least log a complaint in case it turns out to have ramifictions later on.

If the engine light came on then the ecu has picked up a fault somewhere. Check the computer and see what fault code it is generating.

had the same problem, TPS, cost about 200 bucks from dealer

Whats the TPS ? Ive heared it before, no idea what it is.

Throttle Position Sensor, does what the name says, so if it's rooted, it doesn't know what to rev the engine at, so it jumps around the place.

sorry, i must correct it was that and the idle control motor, it would rev to 7g but would hold idle, i could modulate throttle and would be as right as rain but try to make it idle it would stall. i had it stall in the middle of an intersection once, not a pleasant experience

could just be the connector to the TPS. one time the plug to the TPS on my car got crud in it or something and the car ran like poo. The engine had no problem ideling but when i tried to accelerate it just wouldnt increase in rpm. But yeh the computer should have logged what the error was so just take it to a mitsu mechanic and they hook it up and find out what it is. You could try yourself using the beep code method but ive never had much luck with it.

and dude thats not an awesome comment to make on a magna forum in the second gen section. anyway a car is only as reliable as its service history lets it be. Any car which isnt maintained/serviced is gonna run like crap while the majority of cars will run without a real hitch as long as theyre treated well. My car hasnt missed a service since new and even while ive had it i make sure it has new sparkies, filters and clean oil regularly as well as a mechanical check up every so often and besides the timing chain replacement and a few very minor things like stated above i havnt really had a problem with it.

Watch it the 4 cyls are good as long as you replace all the coolant hoses. Had three burst on me at different times just after I brought it. NOT FUN!! From what I've heared the 6cyls are great. Also look what forum you're on fool!
