Hey guys im stuck...
Ive been offered a 1990 GSR Galant for $4000 with RWC and 10 months reg.
It has 2.5 exhaust, ported head and manifolds, 5sp recod box with the guts of a Eclipse
look really sweet, sounds great, and handles like a fighter jet!
NOW what to do with the money iv put aside to do up my TM magna?
A list of stuff i wanted to do:
wade or crow (repco?) camshaft
polished and ported head
4.1 XF carbie with nice cold air setup OR 2l cortina carbie??(its dual fuel)
RPW extractors and 2.5 exhaust
new suspension
strengthen auto
bigger brakes
17 inch rims and new tyres??
the body is absolute mint condition so is the interior. I also have a complete TM EFI manual that doesnt go, i was thinking to EFI my carbie TM, but i dont know if a bigger carbie or efi with bigger throttle bodie, injectors and ECU would have more power.
SO.... What to do?? Fully awesome GSR Galant, or a respectable TM with EFI or Webber Carbie
any help would be really appreciated
Thanks, Andy

yeah go the GSR!
Will be more expensive on parts (i.e. $1000 for compressor for elec. suspemsion!!) as they are an import, but look awesome and the turbo versions rock!!

They are imports??im pretty sure that they were aus delivered.

It is very easy to turbo these, as the vr4 use the same engine only with the turbo bolted on, so the mounts are the exact same. you could either do a engine swap or source manifolds, turbo etc.
go to www.clubvr4.org if u are after some more info

Unfortunately, as I hate to say it, GSRs are dropping in price, and you may need to look at the $4000. A mate bought one for $2500 not long ago, sure it didn't have the mods you mention here, but mods don't really add to a car's value as much as they cost to do.
I have had mine for four and a half years, and do like it a lot. As mentioned above, look for electronic suspension. If it has been removed, you are a lot better off. To tell, look at the top of the front struts. If there is a black plastic cover, with a 4mm black plastic tube going in, then it is probably still there. If the car sits like it is lowered to the deck, it is probably there, and failed. The shocks are about $1000 per corner to replace. Also, look under the guards, if the electronic suspension is there, I think there is a rubber bladder visible inside the springs. I do have a suspension compressor for sale if someone wants one.
Parts are expensive for the GSR as it is an import (although Aus delivered), but mainly because there aren't that many of them around, and they are about 15 years old now. I had mine run up the back of by another Galant GSR (likelihood - nil), and it was about $2500 to repair the rear bumper, bumper reinforcement and the metal part below the plastic bumper. At least my insurance company chased the guy for the money, and it cost me nothing.
How many kms? Is it the original engine? I have replaced the engine in mine, and my mate's one had been replaced with a Sonata motor (same, but I have now been shown some differences). Just make sure everything works, eg elec windows, mirrors, aerial, look for collision damage.
If you have any more questions, PM me.

I think the VR4 came AWD, but not the ordinary GSR???
Correct me if Im wrong..
Only thing... thats a LOT of kays for a 2.0ltr 4cly...
Good if you were gonna do a conversion, but I would think carefully with that many kays.

If it was a 6cyl with that many ks i wouldnt really care, but 4s sont last as long generally, and most 4s I know around that age start getting problems...

err right so your saying a v8 will last even long then a 6
it doesnt matter how many cylinders there is, it matters on the design of the motor and how well its been looked after not the number of cyliners it has

yeh i would agree 4cyls dont tend to last as long, they are higher reving engines compared to 6cyl/8cyl. regardless any engine which is old and/or done 100,000kms + you will run into troubles somewhere.
Unless youre a diehard first gen fan stick with the TM.
Otherwise buy the GSR.. alot more fun and lots more mod parts available for it!

As he says on the site, it is getting a bit noisy on the lifters (not exactly sure what this means), but the engine is a bit noisy from them. I think my car is a bit noisy on them too, but I have a jap import motor in mine, expected to be just under 100,000km now. My Jap import motor only cost me $895, so they can be replaced reasonably cheaply.
When the car is sold, it will have my old stereo surround in it, he's buying it off me now. Then again, maybe that's to go in his VR4.

hey GSR89
how can i get him to lower the price? i havent got $4000, not for a while anyways.
if i could get him to $3500 i reckon it would be a good buy. the km are pretty hight though...
but lifters still need doing
OR
turbo would be nice but i wont do it unless i get an import motor new, or with lower km.
I may as well get a turbo manifold while im at it...
and im prob gonna keep my 1st gen... coz im a hardcore 1st gen fan
turbo would be nice but i wont do it unless i get an import motor new, or with lower km.
Best option if u wanna go turbo is to do a engine conversion as the vr4's come with oil squrters etc

Just make an offer. He's been trying to sell it for a little while I believe. It does have some panel damage, and the lifters, so use excuses like that. Don't get too excited about it. There are plenty of others around. Sure, the gearbox has been done, and that's a plus if you really want to do a VR4 conversion
