FHRX/TIm/Anyone else -

Got any opinions on the Boston FX-93 as rear fill? I'm going pretty skinny, just headunit + 6" splits + 6x9 rear fill + maybe amp later. Would the FX93 fit the bill?

Yep The FX series will sound sweet off the deck and even Better with an Amp..

The plan so far (or should I say this week's plan) is FS60's in the front, FX93's in the rear, and an amp sometime later.

On a related note, could someone give me a rough idea what I can expect to pay (apart from the speakers themselves) for a pro to install the above, including sound deadend rear shelf and front doors? Been talking to my installer, just want a second opinion. :)

I would expect $500-$600 all up for Deadoning and Installation..

Thanks. Boston's site doesn't seem to list either FS60 or FX93, wonder if they're superseded models..?

Tonkins quoted me $150 a door to sound deaden.

Yep that sound about right, check their definition of deaden though. Cos you can put one layer over one panel and call that deadening, but ur trim will still buzz like crazy.

Think you will find them under the S - type entry level. They have replaced the FS / FX series. They are very very sexy indeed. Talk to FHRX to see if he has any of the old stock that he needs to "sell" to make way. Or go for the brand spanking new ones.

Mmmm later run them off say a Audison SRx4 and you will be sweet.

Thanks for the input guys. My guy is a pro (member of CAM and all) so I trust him. He quoted me $100 per door, plus $100 for the rear deck, plus other assorted bits = $400 (ish) all up.

Never heard of deadening the rear deck before, but seems like a good idea. The setup in my old car was capable of making the rear deck buzz like crazy, and that was only a pair of Pioneer 6x9's driven off the 4x50W headunit.

Another question: the kickpanels is definitely the right place to mount the tweeters, yeah? When I got my headunit installed he was talking about putting them in the dash, then when I rang up and started talking about Bostons instead of cheaparse gear he changed his mind and told me the kickpanels were the go.

He changed his mind??? Regardless of splits one of the best staging places for the tweeter is in the kicks. Sound worring dude.

Kickpanels have pro's and cons like anywhere else, the car enviroment is a big con.
Yes you can install up high then use EQ and time alignment to make the sound better, I don't like using extensive EQ'ing though, so prefer to do the install right.

Mounting in the kicks = lower path distance which = better stereo imaging.
Cons = Lower soundstage, but this can be overcome using angles of upto 45 degrees in the kicks. May look weird but firing up very high will give you a better stage height.

Getting this angle requires mounting the tweets very low in the kicks, then u have the problem of legs getting in the way. So best to find a compromise in the kicks, or lower door.

Number one... Do what sounds best to you. No one can tell you what good sound is as ur ears will hear it. When you get it all done get them to sit you in the car and have them move the tweeters around in the kicks/door/dash.

Benefits of having them on the dash is much clearer highs. These can get muffled down in the kicks. But hard dome tweeters can be painful on the dash as well.

As for paying $400 for deadening... Ouch.

You could buy the stuff urself and do it for $150. Depends if you can b bothered or not. happy to give advice on how to do it if need be. But it is a bit of hassle and takes up the good part of ur weekend.

Deadening the parcel shelf is very important if you have a lot of bass in the back.

Peace

Tim

I think the reason he said the dash at first is that most people (IE non-audiophiles) don't care, don't know the difference, and don't want to spend $100 per corner on the install. They want to come in buy some $120 speakers and pay $20 to have him screw them in the door. Once I showed I wanted more than that, he got serious. :)

The $400 is for the full install. Walk in with speakers in a box under my arm, drive away pumpin' tunes. I've done installs before, but they were cheapy setups and I'd like to make sure this one is done right. On top of that, I have no garage to work in, and bugger-all in the way of tools and other equipment. Oh, and I'm a lazy bastard and I can't be bothered. :)

Some people change the location of the Tweeter due to Bright ness and its ability to be adjusted.. I am a lover of a Raised sound stage so I mounted my Tweeters near the outside mirrors are.. The Dash locations in a 3 Gen fire onto the glass leading to reflection..

I used Blu tac to find out the best position before making anything Permanent..

If installed in the kick Panels, TThis can lead to damage by passenegers accidently kicking them in..
Just be careful..

Good point. When I go in I'll ask him about it. Anyway, ordered the speakers today, yay!

Ok folks, finally got my new speakers in. FS60's in the front, FX93's in the rear. They sound awesome! Running off the heaunit for now, but sound great anyway. Definitely a lot brighter!

Some pics below. What can I say...I like the stealth look...

Very interesting place to mount the Tweeter, firing right at the seat ??
I hope they are not too bright???

Show us a Boot shot of Underneath on how they installed the rears???

Yeah, I was a bit surprised at the angle, but they seem to sound good anyway. Stage height seems surprisingly high given the mount heights of both speakers. Yes they are a little bright, but I tend to like it that way. I haven't had a chance to tune the headunit settings fully to suit them yet though.

I'll grab that boot shot for you tomorrow.

Hey Tim, where can i get deadening for 2 doors for that price? I'm thinking i need around 2 metres sq per door, cos it's the back of the door and the trim right? So can you recommend any places that have deadening for that price?

Thanks

Looks like they had to severly Tub the factory holes to get the 6x9's in..
Something I will look forward to when I upgrade mine from my Blaupunkts

Yeah, I hadn't noticed that until I looked at those pics (hadn't really looked until then.) I told him I wanted both fronts and rears under the factory covers, and he did a good job of it. :)

Lookin good Zaphod, it is surprising with the stage height, the reason is, when the fronts are in phase and there are no issues with separation, the speakers should disappear, (you should not be able to localise them)
WHen u cant localise them u hear things straight ahead.

Good to see ur happy with the choice

Autobarn sells stinger roadkill expert. A two door pack (almost enough to do two layers of two magna doors ) for $136

Otherwise Jaycar sells cheap stuff which i wouldnt recommend. Other car audio places should stock deadener.

Best is Dynamat/stinger expert. ALso gspot serenity max etc etc
Dont bother trying to do it on the cheap though, ive looked high and low for cheap solutions and the dont exist. Best bet is to spend right and do it right the first time :)

Peace

Tim

I haven't fully acclimatised myself to them yet, but pretty darn pleased so far.

All I can say is, with Boston you can't go wrong...

Zaphod you should be proud to have such a set up in your Magna..Well Done..
I don't think you would get the same result if you had chosen Kenwood or Sony as I probably would have laughed at you...

haha thanks for the kudos magnat, I'm glad I went the extra mile on this one. I was originally going to do the same as in my last car and just go the basic Pioneer 6x9s / Pioneer/Kenwood entry level fronts, and probably would have if it wasn't for AMC and you guys.
