Get in my car after work, switch it on makes a bit of a whine, but it always does that, go to turn the steering wheel away from kerb, wont move so i thought it may of been on full lock, eventually gain powersteering, battery light comes on, i knew straight away alternator, but i had to pick my mum up and go to work. I get to my mother and open the bonnet, smoke everywhere, seems the alternator seized up and burnt through the belt! Now i couldnt drive my mum home or go to my second job, just great. Ring Nrma the bloke comes out and goes oh we cant replace the KR Verada items, but we can do the TR Magna! i looked at his book and sure enough even though there were the same enigne codes 6G72 they didnt offer the service for the Verada. Ended up getting it towed home so i can replace it all myself, Yippy! no car for work and i have a presentation due tomorroowo!

Should i get it checked out sooner rather than later?

Sounds like worn brushes, i had the axact same thing. You can either replace ur alternator or replace the brushes if you know what you are doing, would be much cheaper. Get it done ASAP, as i waited too long and my car nearly stalled in the middle of a highway whilst turning  .

Whats involed in fixing it yourself?? If its too complicated ill take it to a mechanic tomorrow.

'Tone, give your terminals a clean (sandpaper) and tighten the lead clamps first. Failing that, get a battery tester thingy (looks like a turkey baster with a gauge) and check your electrolyte.
Failing that, nip down to an auto electrician and have it checked out.
