What do you guys think, does the steel heat up to much and make the CAI redundant?
Steel looks better, but if there is a better option for performance rather than looks, i'd have to go that way...
yer ive heard that it will heat up so no real point in the cai
there are some products out there that would not heat up so much and still look good

They will both heat up eventually but steel will retain the heat much more. Probably an insulated or dual layer pipe would be best but this a pain.

plastic you can bend it and hide it so it wont make your car look ugly.

i did mine on saturday with stainless, and we went for a cruise and when we stopped you could still touch the pipe, but obviously if the car is sitting still for a while the pipe will heat up with no air going through it.
go the plastic (cheaper) and then buy some proper heatshield tape.

I have mine made from cheap s**t, drain pipe, spray painted black. I reckon it looks great and is the best against heat. No matter what you do, you can touch the pipe at any given time with no dramas.

the heat tape from rocket industries is crap, i have used some in the past. It doesnt look good, not sure it works well and its a bugger to apply. I would far rather a metal shield around the bottom or around the whole of a plastic pipe.

I have been told thAT ALUMINIUM piping is good to use as it does not retain heat like steel.

I am afraid that your physics is wrong.
Aluminium is a better conductor of heat than steel, Copper is better still.
Plastic, fibreglass, foam, carbon fibre and rubber are much better choices.

where did you get the adaptor bit? or is it just some rubber from a hardware store?
cheers

I dont think my physics is wrong at all, aluminium is a better conductor of heat than steel, hence it will heat up and cool down quicker than steel, yes! I am saying in my post that because of this reason the aluminium will not retain heat like steel and hence have a lower average temperature.
I say this because perhaps people may want polished metal piping in there engine bay, rather than Plastic, fibreglass, foam, carbon fibre and rubber. (All insulators i believe)

Yeah I think JoeNess is right. You would still want to put some type of insulation on though cos it would still get hot.

Anyone done a CAI that's got pics, want to see the whole effect, under bonnet and filter under car.

I would like to see a Carbon Fibre CAI, wouldn't that be expensive.
