Hi All,
I have a 99 Verada and in the mornings (or after it has been sitting for a while) it makes a wierd noise when I first put it in drive (or reverse). I have found that if I warm it up a little first or rev it in neutral, the noise goes away and it perrs beautifully again. I thought it was the transmission so I took it to a specialist. They said it was coming from the other side of the motor and was definitely not the tranny.
I'm starting to stress and I am afraid to drive it :(
Has anyone else had a similar problem or have any thoughts/advice.
Thanks in advance.
doesnt sound like a fan belt slipping does it?

No I don't think it is a fan belt. I wish it was that simple!

it depends on what the weird sound sounds like. could be alot of things. what does it sound like? the other day i had a progressively loud croaking coming from my left-rear on start-up in the morning. was waiting for my gf and had the car in N and handbrake half-heartedly pulled up. i got down and inspected the left-rear wheel and the sound came from there. sounded like the caliper was not gripping the disc properly. but i couldn't be bothered too much and just walked off. too many things with this car!!
btw, anyone knows if the handbrake activates a seperate drum brake at the rear wheels or just it just activate the discs?

I had a look at it this morning and the bearings in the alternator have gone. I have been qouted $11 in parts to fix myself or $150 to do a changeover at the local mechanic. Either way I'm very happy

Thats good to hear...
My AC compressor was the same... but of course it only came on when the AC was switched on.

Yer they use a "drum in hat" setup. There's a drum setup inside the disc for the handbrake and if not adjusted properly or a dust buildup they can graunch and scrape etc.

This could be my problem, when i start my car in the morning it makes this shockingly loud high pitched screatch that wakes up the whole neighbourhood. But it goes away after a while... Hrrmmmm...

my mate had this happen to him wen he got new belts on,
they fixed it by just re tightening it and then they never heard it again

Belt squeal is different to bearing screech... the bearing screech (funnily enough :p ) sounds metallic.
Yer you can tighten the belt up to eliminate the belt squeal but tightening a belt to try to get rid of bearing screech will only *** the bearing sooner as more pressure is exerted on it. Loosening the belt a little bit MAY help, but don't go outside the recommended tension range or you'll get belt squeal. :p
