Hi all..
As some of you know, I had to put my new system on hold as I was going to have to get my wisdom teeth pulled and needed the money for the op... about $1000!!!
But the good news is, they are booked out till september sometime, so I can spend my money! :D
But I need some opinions...
I am getting Jaycar amps as I can get them wholesale.. some of you will jump up and down about quality, but the new ones are supposed to be very good, and for the price nothing comes near them, and I arent going in any competitions!! BTW all the new stuff (except the new kevlar 6x9s) is on the website if you want to check em out www.jaycar.com.au.
But....
Do I get the 4x50WRMS to run front splits and rear 6x9s
OR
Do I get the 2x80WRMS to run the spilts and just run the 6x9s of the HU for rear fill???
There is only about $20 diff, so cost is no decider.
I will be getting a sub and the monoblock amp later on when I get some spare cash.
Whats the best way to go?
I will probably end up getting the new Kevlar 6.5" splits from Jaycar as well as I dont think I can justify spending over $300 on the Morels I was first intending on getting... They are only 80WRMS but plenty loud enough for what I want, and I will have enough left over from the $300 to get 6x9s and an amp as well!!
What id the best for SQ with the proposed setup?
Thanks in advance!
Pete
i got the response amp 2x150 the big black one i just use that on my front splits, had no drama's with it
if yur gonna get rear speakers get the 4 channell one if yur just getting splits in the front then just get a 2 channell

I'd get the 4 channel and amp everything. It's how mine is running now.
I do think it sounds much better had my system both ways and definitely better with the speakers running off an amp.
That said, if your head unit is high quality, and the power wiring to the head unit is top knotch, then running 2 channels off it for rear fill is usually fine. If you push all 4 channels of a head unit hard, then you have to expect a marked decrease in SQ - distortion when you push the volume up mainly.
Just my opinion tho.
Edit: The kevlars are not the greatest, but for the price they are fantastic value - nothing beats them.

or I could get the 4x100!! :D
The splits are 80WRMS and 6x9s are 90WRMS (or something like that!) so would the 4x100 be worth it or would it be to much? I read somewhere that your better having an amp with some spare amperage means its not running as hard "like breathing easier", you just need to turn the gain down a bit.
Cheers

definatly get the bigger amp then :)

Yeah I know they arent fantastic, but the new ones are a heck of a lot better than the old ones with a lot of the old ones shortcomings fixed up.

I can get em for under $100 so I cant really go wrong!! :D with some deadening in the doors they should sond pretty sweet.

Yes, get the bigger amps. They certainly aren't the best amps and have a high failure rate (i used to work at Jaycar). Personally i would stay away from these. The 2 x 150WRMS is a good amplifier though. Perfect for Subs and very few returned stuffed.

Damon isn't the most quotable person, but yes, they are better and cheaper than before. They still outperform splits worth $250 or more. I like them more than any of the Pioneers, Kenwoods or Sonys.
I once heard a pair of Clarion splits in that $220 range that were great, but that was like 3 years ago and they have since been superceded.
That said, another $50 to get to JBL GTO splits or similar in the $220 range would be well worth it. You may even find the low end Bostons on special for $260-270 - definitely worth the extra $100.
And go the 4x100WRMS!!

i got my mb quarts for $200 (although they are a little bright), shop around see what price u can get, and yes the jaycar kevlars would be loud enough but would they have the quality?
personally i would (as i am doing) leave the stock 6x9's for rear fill and run them off headunit, shouldnt need to use them really coz ur the one sitting upfront and live music doesnt come from behind you
i'd say spend more money on your front splits, lss money on 6x9's, amp just ur front and run the rears off the headunit
this is ofcourse if ur going down the subwoofer road, if not then get some decent splits and 6x9's

Dude seriously the MOST important thing if you're after SQ is your choice of speakers.
In all honesty the difference between top quality amps and middle range is nothing compared to top quality splits and middle range splits.
I'd reconsider the speaker choice and try and go the morels.
If it means they'll be running off the headunit for a few months till funds become available, so be it.
As for amps, 50 w will be plenty if you are after good sound. If you want to crank it go th 80w.
The rears don't need to be amped (or plugged in for that matter ;)) j/k
Headunit will be enough to power the rears imo.

hmmm ok thanks for the input guys.
Tim: You are right, and I would love the Morels, but its a heck of a lot of money when Im trying to save for a house... Maybe I could wait till my tax return and get em then, just settle for getting the sub setup for now...
Would it be a complete waste of time running the Morels off a Jaycar amp?
Thanks again

The way i see it all amps are secondary. The most important thing is having a clean signal source. Then having the best signal come out through the speakers. Most headunits nowadays are very good quality.
I would see no problem driving exxy speakers through a headunit or a cheaper amp.
At normal listening levels you will not notice much difference. But the best eq's and amps in the world cant make cheap speakers sound better. Exxy speakers generally don't require a lot to get them moving. The Morels are very light and have a very high sensitivity.
If it means spending more on good quality speakers the jaycar amp will be fine. A more important factor for amp choice providing the amps arent total crap (you all know the really crap brands) is headroom. If you don't drive ur amps to distortion you'll be much better off than having a little expensive amp running at full power.
Install is essential to making ur amp sound well. A poorly powered amp be it through low volts or poor ground will be an avenue for engine noise etc.
Peace

Went and listened to the new Jaycar range yesterday... Hope this helps people if they are thinking of getting some.
New Kevlar splits: Woofer is crap. Missing a massive section of midrange. Tweeters sounded pretty good though. Dont know if you could fix the midrange by fiddling with the crossover (which looks pretty cool!)
New Kevlar 6x9s: Pretty good, would make superb rear fill as a 2-way design.
New Carbon Fibre subs: Awesome!!! Loved the tight clear bass! Am definatly gonna get the 12" (or 10" if funds dont stretch!). Can be reverse mounted as well with a sweet looking basket.
If you want a slightly more expensive set of splits, their 6.5" Kevlar woofer (CS2230) and their super tweeters (CS2210) and crossover (CX2640) sound awesome when paired together. A million times better than the new kevlar splits. The magnet on the 6.5" woofer is nearly as big as the woofer itself. They didnt discontinue these as they have been such a success, and have been their most popular combination. Together they sounded very clear, plenty of midrange (especially compared to the splits!) and crystal top end. Was very impressed. Would have to check if the magnet fits in the door though as its pretty big.
Cheers
Pete
