I finally put my 6 " components in, kenwood pretty much as good as they make, i put the crossovers next to the 6" woofers in the door looks fairly good, my only question is....
I've got a very **** head unit 4x40 watt tape deck, with only my similar 6x9's running the quality was pretty good, with the higher frequencies coming through the tweeters i'm getting a fair bit of distortion, am i right in saying this is due to the ****ty head unit???
still goes pretty nicely,
thanx for any ideas

Yeah, it would be your headunit's problem. The little pissweak internal amps in your headuhnit can't handle it when u turn it up loud. So yeah, it clips the signal, so it sounds like deep fried pickles in soy sauce and warm yoghurt. :doubt:

Yep, upgrade to a small amp. 2x50rms for just the fronts or 4x50rms for the lot is heaps. Ur headunit only puts out 15 w rms probably, to put it in comparison.

Tape Deck??
Do you have a Stacker with it ??
Tapes in general contain a higher rate of distortion and a Lower Bit Quality then CD's.
Hence why the higher frequncies distort...
Try running a Head cleaner through your Deck and see if it doesn't sort it out..
If you like your Deck you may want to look at getting an FM modulated Stacker.. This is a CD player that plays your CD's on a Empty frequency on your Radio.. So you can keep your Tape Deck and get the benefit of CD's.. Only Problem is they play CD's at FM radio Quality and not True CD, but to the Average listener there is not much difference...

Audio novice speaking here ...
Whats the differences between the three:
- Component speakers
- Splits
- 2/3/4 way speakers
Which are the best or do each of them suit different set ups?

honestly cbf'd with a 1000 dorrah headunit... definately get an amp for your speakers though.
oh, and rocket. splits are component speakers, and 2/3/4 is like, how many drivers(speakers/tweeters) there are. component speakers just have the tweeters and mid-range woofers seperate, so it can cause you more trouble mounting them and finding places to put crossovers..
oh, and give a hell of a lot better sound then normal ones lol
U want some azn delicacy?" come to myu place and i'll give some fried pickle yoghurt smoothie!! btw, u can get it out of that crappy juice bar outside the library entrance at qut....*** hate that place.

Rocket...
Splits and Components are the same thing, just different parts of the World use a Different word.. a Split/Component System is a set of speakers made up of Seperate individual Speakers..
a 2-way is a Tweeter and a Woofer
3-way a Tweeter, a Midrange and a Woofer
4-way is a Super Tweeter, Tweeter, mid range and a Woofer..
a Co-axial Speaker is one where the Tweeter and the woofer are mounted on the same frame , one above the other..
So a 2-way Split system is a seperate Tweeter and Woofer, where as a 2-way Coaxial is a Woofer with a Tweeter mounted directly above it...
both have advantages and Disadvantages...
