so yer, lately my car sounds like a choo-choo train mixed with a vw engine... u know the sound.. *che che che che che che* whenever it is on.. i hear it mostly when idling but that doesnt mean it doesnt happen all the time...

the noise is regular, meaning that its not irregular :? uh.. u know.. it happens regularly.. geez i cant think of a good way of putting this... umm *cha 1-2 cha 1-2 cha* not *cha 1 cha 1-2-3 cha 1-2 cha 1-2-3* u get the idea?

maybe its a belt or something... how do I check, what do I look for?

sorry for not making sense too much... i worded this as best as possible... just harder coz its hard to describe sounds :p

ive heard a magna like this before almost sounds like a diesel i dont know what causes that

or perhaps your talking about a oil tick which is caused by not enough oil too much oil or thin oil.

Could be a belt, tappet noise, lifters, water pump etc etc...

hard to say without hearing it, but yeah your best bet would be to pop the bonnet when it's making the noise and try and hear where its coming from

If its the astron 4cyl then they are renowned for timing chain rattle which makes them sound like a truck :) - a rubber tensioner wears away over time or the belt stretches from being revved too high and they get a rattle noise..

thats common on those but without hearing it it could be anything.

its no doubt this... my engine likes to explore the 4.5k+ rev range frequently... :)

expensive to fix? i'll add it to my 200k servicable list...

The astrons like to make lots of noises

Personally my tappets make themselves heard depending on the weather & current engine temp.
But from what you've said I doubt its that.

You've been mentioning an 200k service list? I'd be guessing your getting close to that magic number then? Just that the timing chains on the astrons are meant to be replaced every 100k or there abouts (I'm pretty sure). Sounds like we could have a winner.

Currently on 198546km :)

I'll be on 200000 by the end of the month.

It'll just be a tapet in your top end, i think most astron II end up getting that problem. I don't think it'll be a problem, just turn your stereo up and wait for the ****er to blow up, then fix it :D

:-s I think I'll fix it before anything blows up...

Just run a thicker oil, that can shut up a noisy tappet.
Hey Vaeril, did you end up taking out those intake resinator containers and replacing them with poweraide lids like i said?

Nope... I've read many articles on the resonator box and its its removal and came to a conclusion that it's there for a reason, other than silencing (which is fine, mine is loud enough).

thats fair enough, but give it a go without them and put the lids in and you'll notice the difference in sound, the 4's sound awsome with this done

How much thicker oil?
I'm running Castrol GTX2 at the moment which is 20w-50 or something & my tappets still bitch. Whatcha recken I could run?
I was also thinking of running an additive which is meant to stop the smoke being caused on start up from my worn valve stem seals or whatever.
I've been told by some people it works, others that I'm stupid & also don't bother...

Help?

ok i won't be a smartass
Pop ur bonnet and the 'thing' on the top of your engine with the oil cap is called the tappet cover. under there is your cam shaft with valves, springs etc. when something is worn under there it makes a tapping noise. it could be a number of things but i doubt it's anything to worry about
