Had a drag today in the KJ2. Was at the lights and a guy rocked up next to me in a Series 1 VT SS (5.0V8). He was reving it and just hanging for a drag. I didnt know what to expect. Have had a few drags with VS statesman V8's and beaten them but not sure what the weight and output of the final 5.0 was.
Got the revs upto about 1500 in Drive using the brakes. Soon as the lights went we went for it. I immediately got a car length on him straight away because of the short 1st gear. He caught up slightly round the 80 mark but at 120 when we both called it off, i was still half a car in front and holding the lead. Was very suprised and i think he was too. He gave the thumbs up  for the good effort though.
Would be interesting going non stop. I know the V8's get thier legs once they are up and going but i also know the old 5.0 gets short on breath as she starts to rev. Have had the JK2 up to about 180 and it pulled very hard getting there and wasnt slowing at all.

Nothing like rubbing their nose in it, he must of been really impressed being blown by a Verada wagon. :bowrofl:

being a VT, i'm i know they have a 5.7lt V8 (not a 5.0 lt) and put out 255kw.
without turning this into another magna vs commodore thread,
and i'd love to think i could beat a v8,
unfortunatly i think the 100kw power differnce would have a serious impact on the outcome of a race,
i'm sorry to say but i honestly dont think you outran a VT SS all the way past 100kph.
if it is possible then i'm very sorry, and also excited as all hell.

As above and even the latest VZ only put out 250kW in ss or SV8 form.

Yup... from what I know:
VT SS Series 1: 5.0L V8 @ 179kw (Aussie V8)
VT SS Series 1: 5.0L V8 @ 195kw (HSV option)
VT SS Series 2: 5.7L V8 @ 220kw (first GenIII)
VX SS Both 1,2: 5.7L V8 @ 225kw
VY SS Series 1: 5.7L V8 @ 235kw
VY SS Series 2: 5.7L V8 @ 245kw
VZ SS: 5.7L V8 @ 250kw
Next Release SS: 6.0L V8 GenIV @ 297kw  and a motherload of torque  - these motors are now in the VZ HSV's and are supposed to be awesome, apparently a big improvement on the GenIII.
Most increases in the GenIII over the years has been due to exhaust system upgrades and/or work to the head.
Good to hear you guys giving those V8's a run for their money. Haven't dragged anyone since I bought my TF a few months ago... But doubt it could beat a V8... (yet)

I'm not one for racing, but as it happened I had a little fun with an EL XR8 yesterday. I stopped for traffic at a roundabout and he went around me. I was too slow to stop him from merging in front of me (wasn't expecting it) and he was obviously going pretty hard so I tagged along for the fun of it. Some way up the road was another roundabout, we both went straight through and nailed it up to about 120-130 and I'm sorry to say he was pretty much walking away from me :( He did spray me with black soot and crap in the process though, so I'm guessing he was giving it all it had.

The 195kw, 430nm engine was the HSV option engine avaliable on all Series 1 SS's, it was still standard with 179kw and 400nm of torque. I'm suprised not more had the HSV option.

strange thing was i had a run with a series 1 SS (5.0 again) on the way to work saturday morning, he didn't give any clue he was going to give it a go so he jumped to about 1/2 a car ahead, and i floored it, sticking right beside him till about 120...at which time we both backed off although i reckon i was actually pulling him in ever-so-slightly

Its ok for your mate not being his car/licence etc. Police drive around in these sorts of cars too. For a real comparison, ya should just take it too the track and ask a commo driver for a race. Just be careful dude

Yeah it was a 5.0 V8 and not the Gen 3. Had the old V8 badge on the side and the gen3's have the Gen III badge on them and it sounded way to good for a gen3. Oh yeah, and it was a manual as he was riding the clutch waiting for the lights to go green.
It was in my bro's KJ2 Sedan, I have the KH wagon.

1997 VT SS Series 1: 5.0L V8 @ 179kw (Aussie V8)
Hrmm, I didn't think that was an Australian produced V8? As far as my knowlege goes, they've taken them from the states since well.. forever. And the new Ford Boss egines in the BA are the first australian produced V8 engine in a mainstream car?

The holden V8 was made in Australia dating back to the first in 60's or so.

yes the 5.0 is an aus produced motor always has been, the gen 3 is the import, its actually made in canada, and the Boss? it to is an import, it's claim to fame is because here in oz we were the first ones to put the DOHC (from the 4.6 on the 5.4 block, but it is all made overseas, canada aswell beleive it or not, so it was designed here (from overseas parts) but not built here.
