hey guys

I filled up myTE with regular unleaded from shell the other day while 1/2 tank still had optimax in it. Is that a bad thing ?

Anyways i've already done 100kms since and according the the fuel needle i've used only 1/8th of the tank and i've not been driving on the highway. At this rate i will be doing 800kms to a tank :) .

Does this seem normal  ? or is it the fact that i've mixed two types of fuel and i'm getting higher kms :doubt:

You can mix regular unleaded with optimax. The worst it'll do is give you the difference between the two in octane level (higher than regular not as high as premium). It's recommended you run a full tank of optimax ATLEAST once a month to keep your engine in good condition. I only run mine on optimax.

If your thinking of going optimax, wait until your almost empty then fill her up.

It's a noticable difference, and in my opinion feels better. It all depends on how you drive the car, if your a wanker and accelerating then suddenly braking you will get a much higher fuel consumption. If you drive sensibily and know your car then you will get a few more k's outta optimax.

Yeah, mixing them shouldn't be a problem at all. The maximum benefit will be gained running purely Optimax (or BP Ultimate) though. If you want to gauge the difference Optimax gives you, I'd suggest running two full tanks consecutively before making your judgement.

And who recommends this?

The petrol companies themselves recommend that too. Just go to any BP or Shell petrol station and pickup an information booklet regarding their higher RON fuels. It explains everything.
For you LAZY (http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=au-en&FC2=/au-en/html/iwgen/shell_for_motorists/fuels/zzz_lhn.html&FC3=/au-en/tailored/shell_for_motorists/fuels/optimax/fuels_optimax_your_vehicle_1602.html) people out there. ;)

i run any of the 98 octane fuel, be it optimax, ultimate or vortex. The only time i put normal unleaded in is if there is no 98 available (ie in the bush)

do the 3rd gen motors have a knock sensor? ie do you benefit from putting in higher RON fuel?

I've seen noticeable improvements in both power and economy by running BP Ultimate compared to regular 91RON fuel - both in my TR and my TH.

i dunno mate but i can tell you that my car revs smoother on the 98 stuff. fuel economy is better some weeks, the same others... really depends on driving style i think

ah ok cool
last car i drove was an r31 skyline and if you manually advanced the timing and stuck in 98RON it revved a lot nicer and you could feel the difference

i just picked up my magna today and i was cruising along stoked with my purchase :D , stopped to get petrol, went to put in bp ultimate and put in regular unleaded instead by accident  next time tho..

The 3rd gens don't have a knock sensor ( iirc ) So its really wasted. :doubt:

Correct. While 2nd Gens have a knock sensor, for some reason there's no knock sensor on the 3rd Gens. So you'll have no performance boost from PULP (unless you piggy back your ECU to advance the timing)

However, it will probably deliver a slight improvement in fuel economy and because PULP has more detergents it'll also keep your engine cleaner. I use PULP (Vortex 95RON) at every re-fuel.

No, and no. The environment gains from slightly lower emissions and the petrol company gains from a pricier fuel, the car gains not much at all. Maybe more economy, maybe smoother idling. I've had both high and low RON fuels run rough and smooth. Depends on more than the fuel in the tank.

I think the higher RON fules make the car run a whole lot smoother, i only see little if any increase in economy but my mechanic says 98 ron fules are the best. Saying that I don'y put less than vortex in my car. Depending on the bowsers available, 95 ron is the lowest i put in my car but usually 98 ron

I always use BP Ultimate, makes my car run a bit smoother I find.

Besides which, my mum gets up me if I don't, because she read that BP Ultimate is better for the environment - I'm sure you folks all know what a nagging mother is like lol :D

all is good with optimax, it should be a better fuel then the regular unleaded. However do you guys still justify the price of optimax? 10c over regular unleaded its like 1.15/l on a cheap day

10c a litre really isn't a whole lot, say u put 60L in your car its only $6 more. $6 for piece of mind for me is well worth it.

I agree, I'd rather pay an extra 6 bucks every fill up and have something of higher quality.
I dont smoke, so this can be my addiction.
